ike8120 Posted June 21, 2020 Posted June 21, 2020 This may be a crazy question..... Does anyone use both a trailer and trailer hook on a spinning bait or buzz bait? Quote

It depends on the waterbody you're fishing. They call it 'short-striking', but I'm not sure what it really is, but a trailer hook can make a significant difference. Roger Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted June 21, 2020 Super User Posted June 21, 2020 Not me..I rarely throw a trailer on a spinner bait never on a buzzbait ...I've never used a trailer hook on either. If I'm getting a lot of short strikes I'll throw a more compact bait or a bait with different style blades or maybe switch to a crankbait of some type. To me short strikes mean something isn't quite right to the fish. Plus I throw spinnerbaits around wood and have heard a trailer hook makes it much more snag prone. 40 minutes ago, A-Jay said: I lost all my spinning baits in a freak pickled yo-yo accident. Super User Hammer 4 Posted June 21, 2020 Super User Posted June 21, 2020 Never used a trailer on either bait, never used a trailer hook. Yes I've had short strikes, but I've also caught a ton f fish without them. Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 21, 2020 Super User Posted June 21, 2020 I always add a trailer to spinnerbaits to help preventing bass targeting the blades. A simple 4" ribbon tail grub works 99% of the time. If you get short strikes add a 2" curl grub to the trailer hook. Buzz baits I add a simple 4" worm and split the tail 2"to a little bulk and different look. Tom 1 Quote
Dens228 Posted June 21, 2020 Posted June 21, 2020 I never use a trailer hook on spinnerbaits but always use a trailer. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 22, 2020 Global Moderator Posted June 22, 2020 Spinnerbait I'll use both at times. Buzzbait I'll use a trailer hook at times but never use a trailer. 1 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 Always use a trailer hook on my spinnerbaits with the a long skirt to cover the trailer hook. That way if they go for the back blade they get the hook. I got this from Tactical Bassing LOL Quote
detroit1 Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 Trailer hooks on both, trailers on neither. Spinbait has long skirt, buzz either a frog or tube. Miss VERY few. 1 Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 Wouldn't whatever you're using as a trailer interfere with the trailer hook. I use a swinging trailer hook always on buzzbaits and sometimes on spinnerbaits, and I'd imagine the grub/paddletail/toad would make the trailer hook, if not both hooks, significantly less effective. Maybe I don't understand. 1 Quote
Captain Phil Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 When throwing a spinnerbait, you will catch more bass with a trailer hook. You will catch bass that you would otherwise not know hit your lure. Below is a photo of one of my spinnerbaits. The trailer is a Zoom split tail trailer with about an inch cut off the front. It goes on before the trailer hook. I use a small piece of surgical tubing to keep the trailer hook from coming off. Let the trailer hook swing. Do not peg it in place. If you do, a fish may miss it. The trailer hook will cause more hangups. For that reason, you must learn to cast more accurately. The closer you can fish this lure to cover, the better you will do. Quote
