Do I choose Megabass US Destroyer P5 FMJ for $499 or Loomis MBR GLX 844 for $475?

3 year warranty vs lifetime replacement policy

Do you boat flip?  The loomis has a replacement program which is nice if you occasionally destroy rods but it is baked into the price a bit and that's ok.  You dont get all the pretty parts, attention to detail and beauty of a megabass rod but you do get that great replacement program as compensation.  I'm not a rod killer so I would go megabass but thats me.

Both would be a good choice, just depends on whether you want something with a little more power or not. I believe the bandersnatch is now called the the blade in the p5 series

I've heard the p5 Blade is really soft and very moderate. It doesn't sound like what I am looking for. Just a versatile MH, fast enough to throw a good senko around, strong enough for a jig. But with enough bend to cast accurately and also throw some single hook moving baits like a chatterbait, even a spoon. The extra power of the SD is unnecessary from a cover perspective, but everyone seems to praise it's versatility and I'd love to be able to throw a weightless senko, all the way to a 6" magdraft. I realize that is a pretty unrealistic expectation.

What your asking for is unrealistic in terms of doing all of those things well.

A jig, chatterbait, spoon, and senko all perform best on different types of rods.

Jig extra fast

Chatter Mod fast

Spoon mod to mod fast

Senko fast

What is the first thing you’re going to tie on and fish 50% of the time or more? Buy the rod that matches that best and covers another technique moderately well.

Every rod in the MB lineup minus the punching rods will load and cast 99% of lures in their range well. I’ve fished their JDM/US offerings low and high end and it’s all smooth.

If you want a rod to do it all source a JDM Destroyer Carbon Head Wild Buch, USA Destroyer Javelin, or Croix Xtreme 7’1MHXF. I own and recommend all 3.

Not too unrealistic for the P5 Super Destroyer. I read the above and took mine out rigged with a Shimano Bantam. Over two the trips, I tried 4 different baits with this set up (1/2oz jig, 5in senko weightless and weighted with 1/8oz bullet weight, Deps Evoke 2.0 Crankbait, and a 6in Magdraft). All did just fine but it did struggle some with the 5in Senko with no weight. On the high end of it, I have been using a 6in Magdraft on this rod since day one. It does max it out but it works. This rod is weird in that the tip is a little fast but the mid section is soft and the butt of the rod has some power (not too much though). It also loads differently but correctly  at different weights. If I had to pick one rod to do just about anything, it would be this one. My only complaint is that the handle is slick when your hands are wet.

That description makes it pretty hard to not seriously consider that rod. For traveling light while pond hopping.

Wow is all I could say when I unboxed the rod.  Megabass Addermine.  It weighs next to nothing.  Not sure how Ill be able to use anything other than Megabass rods now.  I am beyond impressed.  Cant wait to fish it and once I do Im sure Ill need more.

I hope your luck runs better than mine with Megabass. The one & only destroyer series rod I bought broke the first time I used it on a mild hookset with a jerk bait. They did replace it within two weeks under warranty. Six months after I bought it they dropped the retail price from $500 to $400 on the same model rod. That did not set to well with me I payed $500 to acquire it.

Thanks. I've had many helpful answers concerning this rod but none this specific. Sounds like the rod for me. Unless I can get my hands on an imported Steez Black Jack that is. *devilish grin*

Unable to speak to the price drop. But there is a lot of talk about MB rod breakage, as I'm sure you well know. I broke a Levante (Gen 2) rod. It was my fault and happened in an accident. Oddly though, it was an accident that would not have, and DID not, break any rod by another manufacturer. The truth of the MB rod breakage, I'm sure, lies somewhere in the middle of all the talk. On the positive side the MB rods I have are really unique and fun rods to fish and I don't regret buying them, nor would I hesitate to buy another at this point.

The thought of breaking one does run through my head. It has kept me from buying the P5 Wind Buster, probably the most popular P5 rod next to the X-bites. I always see people saying "I love the Wind Buster but I broke it." and it happens in odd ways, like stepped on it, casting a 1/4 oz bait, or the infamous hook set.

I haven't had any bad luck on breaking but I did get a rod that had a finish. The top coat of resin started to flake off. Megabass replaced it. I got it in about 3 days after filling out a warranty claim.

Odd on the price change.  They never discount their rods unless they are discontinued.

Megabass lowered the suggested retail price of the rod by $100 5-6 months after I purchased it at the higher price. I assumed that particular model was not selling well so they lowered the price to better align with the market place.  It was the 7’-1” Black Jungle deep cranking, slow rolling model. That devalued my rod by $100 based on what I spent for it & reduced the potential resale accordingly.

I have three tatula elite rods I bought for $180 in the past 1-2 years going for $90 now on close out every where. It happens with everything. I’m not mad about It.

My Megabassitis has gotten pretty severe. Docs don’t think I’ll ever recover. If you or a loved one sells off their collection of St Croix, Loomis, or Shimano rods in order to buy more, know that there is no cure.

Sold my 853c NRX+ because the X-bites was my clear preference. And it just kept going.
