Bluegillslayer Posted June 21, 2020 Posted June 21, 2020 The Creme ultralight crankbait is very good for bluegill and bass in the shiny blue color. I also have been getting lots of bass and bluegill on a floating Rapala minnow. 1 Quote

They are pretty lifelike and have a strong scent to them. I catch nice bluegill and crappie on these, especially when paired with a small jighead My youngest has started wanting to try fishing, so I've been out a few times for bluegill with him. I've been using the small Gulp minnows and having a lot of success. On my pond, they seem to like the chartreuse and white ones. Rigged on a #4 light wire hook with a BB split shot about a foot up from the hook, and the smallest bobber that will support the weight. Adding a pink Crappie Nibble to the hook just above the Gulp minnow really seems to increase the number of bites. 2 Quote

I like doing that for added scent. Quote

Smells like fish Posted June 25, 2020 Author Posted June 25, 2020 One nephew and myself caught about a dozen gills this evening on rooster tails and jigs with curly tails. We are gonna have to go get some down sized tackle. Crappie size jigs are way to big for these stunted thousands of bluegill. He bought 100 bass fingerlings and 25 catfish and added to his acre pond this week. In a few year we will have some fun with those bass. Quote
PourMyOwn Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 Rainbow Plastics torpedo float with a 3' leader and a dry fly. A close #2 is a 2" white or pearl mister twister on a jighead. Quote

Black Hawk Basser Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 I usually use tungsten bead head flies or small lead head hair jigs that I tie myself. Don't overlook small spoons designed for ice fishing. One of my favorites is the Custom Jigs & Spins Slender Spoon. Quote
Fallser Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 I fly fish for them and they're a blast on a fly rod. I don't use small poppers or bugs though Most of my top water bugs are tied on size 6 or 8 hooks. Discourages, most of the time, the dinks. I didn't always fly fish for them and I did well with white, yellow or chartruese twister tail grubs on 1/8 or 1/16 oz jig, small Road Runners, Mepps or small in-line spinners, small floating Rapala minnows. Bait, red wigglers over night crawlers, crickets and leeches. 1 Quote
Luke Barnes Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 I'm a die-hard believer in the Panfish Magnet stuff by Leland Lures. The kit comes with 1/64 oz jig heads and the split tail worms in a variety of colors. Ive caught bluegill and all species of sunfish, bass, crappie, and a small cat. Ive caught a 2lb bass on it on my UL with 2lb line so it was a fun fight! Quote
Yuddzy Posted April 22, 2022 Posted April 22, 2022 Reviving an old thread, I'm thinking any smaller soft plastic (1.5-2ish") Texas Rigged like normal with an appropriate weight would be one of the most effective and simple ways to target panfish? Hoping to catch some bluegill, pumpkinseed, crappie, and rock bass this summer. ? Quote
RealtreeByGod Posted April 22, 2022 Posted April 22, 2022 Powerbait Honey Worms either on a small jighead or on a small hook + split shot under a bobber. 1 Quote

Dogface Posted April 23, 2022 Posted April 23, 2022 I use corn when I take the grandkids. I can't take the BGs off the rods quick enough. I do like Eric's traps. I have some small traps I will try. 1 1 Quote

Usually go with slow sinking spiders or poppers if i want some topwater action. Both always seem to out fish anything conventional. This exactly . I also like these little honey Bee flies I once found . Quote

I had a small fly box with a bunch of hand tied spiders, ants, and bees and I lost it somewhere. They were given to me by a member on crappie.com so they were irreplaceable. Plus a bunch of nice dry and wet flys and nymphs my wife bought me. Just gone and no clue where. 1 Quote
Aaron_H Posted April 24, 2022 Posted April 24, 2022 If I'm targeting bluegill/shellcrackers, there are a couple of preferred lures I use. Strike King/Mr. Crappie "Slab Slasher" jigheads 1/16oz or the Roadrunner 1/16oz or 1/8oz underspin. Both paired with either a Big Bite Baits grub (white/chart or black/chart) or the Mr. Crappie Shadpole CT (junebug/chart or pearl white). Quote
garroyo130 Posted May 1, 2022 Posted May 1, 2022 In clear water its hard to beat a pistol pete spin fly. I used to walk the banks of the river here in Austin and the typical lures did well but rock bass were impossible to catch with anything but these. 1 Quote
crypt Posted May 1, 2022 Posted May 1, 2022 F3 original floating Rapala, any color will do,bread balls, tiny trap, any tiny crank bait seems to get the job done around here.love Slab Slasher jigheads with grubs. Quote

I originally purchased them at WalMart about 15 years ago but have been buying straight from the company since. https://www.pistolpeteflies.com/pistol-pete-flies-store-fly-selection I cast them on an UL rated down to 1/32oz on 4lb line. 1 Quote
