Maggiesmaster Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 I use mostly Lews reels, but probably my favorite is an old gold BassPro Carbonlite. I paid something like $60 for it way back when; wish I had bought several more. 1 Quote
NOC 1 Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 The reels I use are almost all older reels. 6) TDZ 4) Steez OG 4) Px68-R I do also have a Tat SV TW and a Tat CT-r. The only reason I bought those were because I needed something heavy so that a couple of ST Croix LTB sticks I bought would not be so out of balance. They are OK...but they don't really hold a candle to my older stuff, almost all of which have upgraded spools, ZPI bearings, Carbontex, and bling. I wish that I would have bought a couple of old Zillions instead of the Tatulas. I have a Revo SX G3 that gets used for nothing but trolling and a Pfueger Supreme XT that I use for the occasional Carolina rig. I see nothing better in the newer stuff to make me want to throw aside my old reels that are in tip top shape. I think while the spools, drags, and brakes may have gotten better in some cases, the quality most certainly has not and the spools etc can be upgraded. Quote
VolFan Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 I fish Curado Ds and Pixys almost exclusively. They just work for me. 3 Quote
Alex from GA Posted June 27, 2020 Posted June 27, 2020 I'm using several Shimano BMP models from the 80s I use when I don't need a higher speed reel. They're 5:1 and good for spinnerbaits, topwater and worms etc. Quote

Heard a lot of good things about older Quantums and Any Garcias any specific models? I don't know about sleeper, but I still like my Ambassadeur Mag I Plus. From mid-'80s. Disengaging level wind for casting, long handle (well, longer than the others I have from back then), smooth spool spin but the reel is a little geary when retrieving as it always was. Good line retrieve for crankbaits -- not a speed demon but isn'tvery slow either. Not low profile but more like the round reels. I never really liked the "flipping" switch, but normal casting/thumb works well for backhand or pitching casts. This one has the spool release behind the spool, but other similar models have it on the side. Quote
CrankFate Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 I’d recommend just buying a new reel. Old reels are more about nostalgia than anything else. Unless you are fishing heavy. There are lots of good options in older reels for heavy fishing. For anything other than the heaviest bass setups, newer is probably better. Quote

It lacks instant anti reverse and a thumb bar, but it is a heavy duty reel that can take the abuse. I had a pike show me why my Mag Plus's lack of instant anti reverse was a problem. With the quality of many $100 or less new reels today, it's hard for me to even consider buying an old used reel. Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 28, 2020 Super User Posted June 28, 2020 The topic is older reels worth buying? Old reels older then 25 year or mid 90's most didn't have instant anti reverse or good drag systems. Both Shimano and Daiwa made excellent reels the past 25 years and well worth buying if in good condition. Tom Quote
greentrout Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 check out garage and estate sales ... recommend in nice neighborhoods ... if you see anything like the above it's still very fishable even without the latest technology and usually at a very favorable price ... good fishing ... 2 Quote

Core 50mg7 is over 10 years old and still better than 90% of the light reels made today. The OG Steez reels are still just as good as anything made today. TD Sol and Fuego still get it done. Old Curados. There's a lot of really great reels that will fish as well or better than new stuff in any application. 2 Quote

To me a used OG Steez at $200 is a good reel and it is cheap compared to the price anything as good would cost new. You're welcome to your cheap and good. But you won't impose yours on me. 1 Quote

Maybe I am mistaking your meaning, but you said, "To me the topic is older reels that are good but cheap..... like quantum..... Abu Garcia." I like my gear and firmly believe that the money spent on the older stuff is better spent in general in terms of value for the dollar. I think the OP would be better off saving a bit more money and buy one of those old Steez reels for $200 than he would be spending $70 on a used Tatula or ABU. He'd still have that old Steez working just as it always has years from now most likely. Some of the new stuff is good too, but what I would call the good new stuff makes the $200 Steez seem pretty cheap. any one of my old reels can these days be had for around $200 and they are all better reels than say a brand new Tat SV/TW for the same price. The lesser used stuff will get you by for cheaper, yes. But it is money that you will have to spend again either because that cheap reel crapped out or you want to upgrade to something decent. 7 hours ago, MickD said: With the quality of many $100 or less new reels today, it's hard for me to even consider buying an old used reel. I also have a $75 Yumeya shallow spool for 09 Aldebaran coming for it This is forum where one ask and another answer or comments. I kind of know that you don’t care about Original Poster, since you always answer in other topic with get Daiwa SV no matter if OP ask about shimano or other reels. I even think you are Daiwa representative and get commission every time your type that. Lol You should have start you own Topic not hijack others. jtesch Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 I still fish 2- J-Dreams and 2-tuned OG Zillions along with a tuned TD—Z. Also fish several new or newish Tatula SV. And SS sv’s. I think the quality reels from the late 90’s on can still be usable today with proper maintenance and maybe a little tuning but it all comes down to how much you want to spend. The 2020 tatula sv and tatula elites are darn good reel in the 200-250 range so you’ll have to find older reels at a good price to make it worth your while. The OG Zillions are tanks and will last forever with maintenance Quote
