kshays Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Hello, I am going to link a video I uploaded showing my curado 100d making a noise when spin the handle. What I have done so far is this. I enjoy learning and doing things for myself, but I may have to send it in to DVT if it becomes too complicated. - Cleaned the entire reel and oiled and greased what shimano suggested. - The bearings in the curado look like they have an orange shield on them, not sure if they were replaced at one time or not. - I have tested it with/without the spool attached. No difference - The main gear is black plastic instead of the brass ones, not sure if this is OEM or not for those curado 100d's. - This last time I took it apart I cleaned everything and did not apply any grease or oil drops to bearings. 3rd time I've taken it completely apart and the noise did not change at all. Oh, and the tape on the line does not effect whether it is on or off. video: Any suggestions is appreciated. Thanks Quote
Heartland Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Check and see if the tape is rubbing on the underside of the reel frame as the spool rotates....... Quote

Hi Keeper, I checked that thinking it could be it, but with the reel apart and turning the drive shaft by hand I can hear the noise, just not as fast if that helps. This is what the bearings look like in the reel. Believe they are 3 of them, might be another one. https://www.ebay.com/itm/ABEC-7-Hybrid-CERAMIC-Bearings-FOR-SHIMANO-CURADO-CU-100D-COMPLETE-BAITCASTER/291756854204?hash=item43ee104bbc:g:nQsAAOSw2GlXGeDE Edited June 18, 2020 by kshays Quote
kshays Posted June 18, 2020 Author Posted June 18, 2020 Update: Seems if I turn the reel on its side or upside down the noise goes away. Quote
shackman Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 The noise is coming from the anti reverse assist pawl sounds like. A lot of people take them out but I have 7 100D’s and I leave them in. It just needs to be taken apart and the brass ears squeezed in and put a little dab of grease before putting it back on the ratchet. Also, the main drive gear is made out of aluminum, it’s not plastic. The 100D’s and chronarch 50 mg’s are all I fish with. They have the exact same footprint and I just prefer it over the newer style. I also like the Traditional 6 pin Braking system. Just set em and forget em. Maybe you’ll get it quietened down bud. Great reels. Also if you want a brass gear to replace the aluminum, those gears can still be had but the pinions are almost impossible to find.BNT1325 is the part # for the main drive gear. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 18, 2020 Super User Posted June 18, 2020 I can't tell what the noise is exactly. The main gear I think should be brass as well as the pinion. The orange seal bearings will make noise. The ceramic bearings tend to make a grinding sound. The seals can also rub and make a weird noise. I took the seals off of mine. If I were you I would get a factory set of bearings and a set of new gears and start there. Here is part two on a Shimano Citica from the same era. You can see what is should look like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFxdapDGOOY 1 Quote

Hey Kenny, I did think it was the reason at one time today lol. Here are some pics of what the gear looks like. Seems as though I am missing a bearing clip on the left side plate also. I did buy this reel used sometime back, but at that time it looked and acted like an almost new reel. There was a ton of grease everywhere so I cleaned it all out figuring that was way too much grease just sticking everywhere. Of course after that it is making this noise. Figured I should mention that as well. TY Quote

Do you see it? Quote
kshays Posted June 18, 2020 Author Posted June 18, 2020 Forgot to reply to the other topics Kenny. I also have a 50mg that I love and a Bantum 100A Chronarch and a Curado 200DHSV. 32 minutes ago, FishTank said: I can't tell what the noise is exactly. I probably should try and get a factory set of bearings and the brass gear since I do not know how often the previous owner cleaned it. TY! I will go and try it without the AR Pawl and see what happens. Will post shortly on the result. TY Quote
kshays Posted June 18, 2020 Author Posted June 18, 2020 (edited) Ok, turn it back apart and removed the AR pawl and put it back together. From what I can tell the noise is gone now. What purpose does the AR pawl serve? Also, should I go ahead and get a brass gear to replace that black one? PS: Oh, that was the video I was watching mainly to clean my reels FishTank. Very informative looked like. TY everyone! Edited June 18, 2020 by kshays Quote
shackman Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Good deal man! I would continue to use the aluminum gear if it is fine and no teeth are missing but go ahead and get a brass one to put back in case they get scarce. The AR Assist pawl is there in case the roller clutch bearing fails which do not do very often. I keep mine in my reels because of cold weather fishing which I find the roller clutch bearing will roll back when it’s cold out. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 Most likely the redundant AR as suggested. If so it’s not hurting anything. Likewise you can remove it if you want. I see this a lot, fast spinning the handle doesn’t prove, indicate or rule out anything. It’s not a normal use of the reel. Things look good in the pics. Those are ceramic bearings which are likely audible but not a problem. Quote

Hello DVT, I came a hair in removing that and trying to pinch the top down because it looked bent somewhat, but never did. Man I tried slow moving the shaft by itself connected to the pinion gear to see if I could pin point the noise and a lot of other stuff. I can tell a difference in my Chronarch 50MG vs the Curado 100D in just regular retrieve. The 50mg is just so smooth and quite seems like. TY DVT! Kevin Quote

kshays Posted June 19, 2020 Author Posted June 19, 2020 I was wondering the same thing myself on the gear after I opened it up. At first I was like, "hmmmmm". Kevin Quote
Mattloyal Posted October 27, 2020 Posted October 27, 2020 Are there any curado 100d drive gears anywhere ? Quote

Maybe try e-replacement parts. You really need to match it up to a new pinion. Good luck. BTW welcome to the forums. Quote
