I already spent $150 so Ill probably just pay the xtra 50 bucks to get a Patriot rod. Do you have any experience with BPS Extreme rods? I have a 6'0 medium that I absolutely love but they dont make those anymore. If the Patriot is similar to the Carbonlites or Extremes that would be perfect for what Im looking for. I would look into the St. Croix Avid X rods, they are awesome for your dollar and have a 15 year transferable warranty. The 6ft medium fast action in spinning or casting is what you want and is a completely different animal when compared to a St. Croix Premier with the same specs. Quote

newyorktoiowa57 Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 I have the mojo spinnerbait rod and really like it. A lot of the other SC rods I have held do seem tip heavy though 1 Quote

Isn't the patriot discontinued now? Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 18, 2020 Super User Posted June 18, 2020 The OP Prefers St Croix rods he will need to pay $200+, the Premire series is $150 price point. Thr best bang for your buck IMO is Major Craft Nanoace at $110 to equal to several $200 rods. Tom Quote

No. They are in short supply like everything else at bass pro and Cabelas. Have you been in one lately? Stock is low in both in Conn. Since this Covid garbage started. Quote

How does the Patriot compare to the Carbonlite? Im just wondering what the difference in $100 bucks will be. Do you have any idea how the power rating compares to the Carbonlites? In my opinion the Carbonlites play a little lighter than their power rating. The St Croix Premier I bough seemed like it plays a little heavier than its medium rating. I would rather the rod feel a little lighter on the power side than heavier. Quote

IMHO the patriot is far lighter and better balanced than a lot of rods. i love the ones i have. they are made in America so i feel good about that too. i just dont see how you go wrong for the price with a ten year warranty. KP Duty Posted June 20, 2020 Posted June 20, 2020 I would just use it for shallow cranks and top water. 1 Quote
Squarebill79 Posted June 20, 2020 Author Posted June 20, 2020 I decided to trade it in for a Carbonlite 2.0. I've been using BPS rods for years now so maybe Im just used to their feel, but I was not impressed at all with that line of St Croix rods. I thought I would be going up in quality since they are more expensive but the Premiers just seem cheap to me. I have nothing against that company, I just wanted to try out some different brands this time. If money allows Ill probably try one of their Avid series rods at some point. I picked one of those up in the store and they seem like quality rods and a much better build quality than the Premier Series. 1 Quote
Eric Matechak Posted June 21, 2020 Posted June 21, 2020 St croix rods are good quality but I am not a huge fan of the bulbous handles. My hands aren't massive and I have trouble getting a firm grip on the reel with the thickness of the rod. Leads to poorer hooksets. I don't like these rods for my arsenal Quote
5-20 Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 Funny. That is my exact favorite rod for smallmouth fishing. The Premier 6'6 MF. If I had to pick only one rod to bring with me for river smallie fishing, that would be it. I've caught so many on my old rod. I think it's about 17 years old now and it was not until only about 2 years ago that an eye guide finally broke off. Fantastic rod. Love my Premier rods. I really don't fish St. Croix much unless its spinning gear or light casting gear with moving baits for smallies. Such a fun and effortless rod to fish. I think I bought mine for like $100 or $110 back then but I think they're now up to like $160 or something like that? Still well worth it in my opinion. Quote
