Do any of you fish these big worms with success? I’ve wanted to give the big 12” worms for awhile but friends always told me a waste of time and they don’t catch anything with them. Maybe they aren’t fishing them right or just aren’t patient enough? I ordered a few things to try them out. Got some of the worms and some 7/0 ewg monster worm hook. Pegged a light weight with it and went to work. Second cast ever with the 12” in green pumpkin I got crushed while crawling on the bottom. I caught what I believe was a male up on a bed With a senko and figured there was a female nearby so I backed off and just crawled the monster worm back to my boat very slowly and bang! I didn’t use it too much after that as I was making a real effort to switch up baits throughout the day. I caught 15 bass in about 4 hours so they were biting everything. I went back to the monster worm at the end of the day and a bass a little smaller than the worm tried to eat. Unfortunately for the bass, I set the hook like there was a 10 lber on the other end and sent the 7/0 through it’s face. The fish was okay but it could have been bad. Just curious if anyone else has success with this bait? Also, even if it seems a bit ridiculous I would recommend giving it a try.

Hopping a big worm off the bottom is one of my favorite summer patterns/techniques. Also good for fishing standing timber.

I use the Zoom magnum ll worm 9".

Throw it a lot on 5/0 hook and the pumpkin chartreuse does well in clear water.

I've been doing my homework on ledge fishing at Kentucky Lake and apparently the Ol Monsters have been staples for that for some time.

the ol monster is a good summer ledge bait on nearly any lake.

they are also good for fishing deeper brushpiles.

Personally I don't like ewg hooks for worms.

I have a much better hookup ratio with standard offset worm hooks. usually 4/0 for the ol monster.

I don't remember which hook I used, but back in the day night fishing with 10" black-blue flake Power worms, was a real kick.  In the delta, tossing them into the shadow pockets between tulies.

Just make your buddies think you don't throw it and then when your sending them pics of hawgs just lie about what you caught them on

Size is another variable that influences fish to strike a lure.  There are times when large worms work better than small worms. Back when I was fishing tournaments,  I caught many a "kicker" fish on a Ol' monster red shad worm.  In the seventies when Rodman first opened, we were throwing J&W Hawg Hunter worms.  Those 13" worms made the Ol' Monster look small. If you want to catch a big fish, use a big bait.

Great bait.  I have used on occasion over the years but tend to catch more fish on the Berkley Power Worms and Strike King Anaconda.  I use a 5/0 EWG or a flipping hook with a 1/8oz or 3/16oz bullet weight.

7/0 EWG is over kill for worms being used. Owner Twist Lock 4/0 or 5/0 Light is all that is needed.

In years gone by, the Zoom Ol Monster spent a lot of time in the limelight,

which it later shared with the Berkley Power Worm  (10 & 12").

Today of course, straight-tail worms and stick-worms enjoy greater popularity than ribbontail worms.

I too believe a 4/0 or 5/0 offset round bend worm hook would be ideal for the big ribbon tails combined with a 3/16th oz. tungsten  bullet weight T-Rigged using a lift and drop technique .

I prefer the standard Ol' Monster to the mag. Most of the extra size is just in the tail and I don't get any bigger bites on the mag than the standard, I just get fewer baits per pack.

I really like big straight tail worms during the summer when everyone else is fishing swimming tail worms. Worms like the YUM Mightee worm 10.5" and Strike King 10" Bull Worm on a special swinging football head that I make for them.

Good to know. I actually just got some dirty jig swinging footballs the other day. I believe 1/2 oz 4/0. Would the worms work well with them?

Yeah, those will work. I make very light ones with large hooks to keep them from snagging in the rocks and fit the big worms.

Haven't used the Mag Ol Monster, but I've caught a lot of fish on the regular version.  I do best with slow, dragging sweeps of the worm, rather than a hopping motion.  Motor oil is my go-to color.

Motor oil is deadly is clear water.  I've been close to breaking my p.b. a handful of times with a motor oil color or similar.
