Ok - so I have been contemplating making my own spinnerbaits.  First off, I dont have any of the supplies but I have been looking through the net craft catalog.  I realize I could make my own from the premade forms with heads on them but i would really like to pour my own for fun.  I have

wire tied skirts in the past and have a bunch of blades kicking around.

Has anyone tried pouring a head and rather than putting a hook on the wire form, putting a straight wire out the back so you could put a free swinging hook, weighted or unweighted?  I think it would be great for keeping the fish pinned when fighting (similar to the megastrike concept) but worry the hookset might be compromised.  It would also allow for easy weight changes without tying a different spinnerbait on...

Here is a picture I drew to help put a graphic to what I am talking about.

Yes. I have done something similar to that and can see an application in certain circumstances, however, the traditional method has been a staple for a reason.

The swinging hook can be achieved by attaching the looped tag wire to the bend of the wire form normally designated for the hook. The tag wire runs out the butt of the poured jig and then a loop is formed that holds the hook outside of the lead body.

Clear as mud???

I've done it before and I couldn't see that it makes a huge difference in catch ratio if you keep your line tight.

With that said, I will run a .050" wire straight through to the butt of the mold and secure a hook inside the cavity.  Once poured the hook is secure in a traditional way.  The front tag end of the wire is then dressed with a chatter blade.

Spinnerbaits are probably one of the least cost effective baits to make. There's so many components to buy, you really don't save any money.

Freedom Tackle made a spinnerbait with this same concept, they are still in production.

It does get expensive to try and have all the different combinations.  Personally I have like 7 spinnerbait molds myself.

That's good advice.

I can see home assembly though, when your heart is set on an unorthodox combo.
