@herder That is a excellent choice👍🏻 I’m going to have to see if I can pick up a 12 pack later on today.

Good stuff. I like it. Light drinking. Sweeter than many. Kinda fruity and little bits of spice. Pleasant experience throughout - nice smelling. This is a bourbon that doesn’t pack a large punch but it’s good nonetheless.

@herder Stopped at my local grocery store tonight and they just got it in a few days ago 😃IMG_2467.jpeg.20ef6a51c79f216684df2e5e4a34c84a.jpegIMG_2466.jpeg.c22a8eea87ac03aacd327305bec154e9.jpeg

Stopped at a father and son liquor store that we love.  Really good people.  I know how to properly ask about what they have in back.  This is our fourth bottle of the B523 Larceny.  It's spectacular.  The EJ 18yr was only $5 over MSRP.  That's just honest business right there.  These bottles will be lighter by tomorrow.

No more drinking for me. I went too hard for too long. I got diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. Have to quit drinking, quit vaping, and drastically change my diet.

If you can avoid the cancer, you're ahead of the game. Pancreatic cancer is pretty much 100% nails in the coffin.

You were only supposed to take a sample not drink the whole bottle!

I probably could have.

I think the craft bourbon/whiskey trend sparked a craft tequila trend. I see more and more tequila's popping up every day

What’s the deal with Buffalo Trace?  Went to the local ABC State store and was looking to buy my fishing partner a gift bag to make Old Fashioneds so I read up on what the best bourbons were for that drink.  A few expensive ones came up that I have in my private stock like Eligiah Craig and 4 Roses but Buffalo Trace came up as well.  I was scanning the 500 or so bourbon selections and didn’t see it so I asked one of the clerks and I got a strange look.  He asked me if I had been on the website and I told him no and gave him my story.  He said they just got their allotment (1 case).  I asked where they were  and he said we don’t put them out, we keep them behind the counter.  They will all be gone by tomorrow and we don’t know when we will get another allotment.  I found that odd because in all the articles I read, Buffalo Trace was listed as the “affordable” brand.  He called bs on that and said maybe in other states but in Virginia it’s not.  I promptly bought one.

It was on the shelf at my grocery store yesterday

Well I've been on a buying rampage the past few months, I now have a very respectable bourbon and rye collection. Got a nice profit sharing check Friday, so yesterday me and the missus ran up to the city and did a little bottle hunting. She's not into whiskey, but she does enjoy helping track down the bottles. Ended up hitting two stores and finding different bottles I've been looking for..two ryes and two bourbons.

Evan Williams 1783: $25--90 proof-- I've not been a huge fan of Evan Williams but heard this is much improved over the black label and BIB(which is decent itself). For the price I'm impressed. Much more going on and a better mouthfeel.

Middle west dark pumpernickel rye cask strength: normally $69--124.1 proof--store pick on sale for $55. I've wanted to pick up the base model 96 proofer for a while, but the store I was in had cask strength single barrel store picks for only $8 more so I went that route. This is unique amongst the ryes I've had..has some of the typical black pepper, citrus, mint bright notes but also has legitimate pumpernickel dark savory type notes on the back end. This is very interesting and I'm excited to get into the bottle and see what develops.

Jack Daniels SBBP rye:$60--128.3proof-- I've heard this was gonna be a regular shelfer but until today I hadn't seen it. Well the bigger store I was in had a full 2 rows on a shelf plus a double case stack on an end cap. I've liked the bonded rye quite a bit and the BP didn't disappoint, similar flavor profile but the tastes and mouthfeel\viscosity have been turned up to 11. This was a safe bet as I knew I'd like it, and I wasn't disappointed.

Makers Mark 46 cask strength: $65--110.1 proof-- last but definitely not least, this is the only  bottle I had settled on buying before even going. Now I don't mind the standard Makers offering, but the french oak stave aging and extra proof really do work wonders on this stuff. On the nose I get a big hit of dark raspberry jam and vanilla custard. The pallet delivers a big dose of that sweetness with a nice savory spice of barrel char. This is the only bottle I had to track down by hitting a second store, but I'm very happy I did.

All in all I had a very successful bottle hunt and I'm very happy with all my purchases. Now for the sake of my relationship I better pump the brakes for a bit on the whiskey spending! Only bottle I'd pull the trigger on right now is an ECBP C 923 but with the hype surrounding it I'm more likely to find a Stagg at this point.

In the past month or so I've seen this bottle in at least 3 or 4 stores at MSRP, around $25-$30. I just watched a YouTube video the other day and saw a guy hunting bourbon, he pointed out the store he was in had a double case stack plus like 4 shelf rows of BT for regular price. From what I could see that particular store had approx 150 bottles, although m not sure what state this was in. Some states are strange on what they consider allocated or how they distribute thru the state. That said I honestly like Elijah Craig small batch as well or maybe even better, and the price is very similar both hanging like I said in that $25-$30ish range.

Anything that Sazerac Co makes is allocated at MSRP. I can find it all day for $50 in DC, but it's $26 in MoCo and lasts only a few days on the shelf as their bottom entry bourbon. Stuff like Eagle Rare will be gone in 15 minutes, and EH Taylor or Blantons you have to line up at 7AM once a month for.

That being said, Bowman Brothers Small batch, or John J Bowman Single Barrel are better alternatives in VA. They use Buffalo Trace distillate, and re-distill it in copper stills in Fredericksburg and then age it up.

Only buffalo trace stuff I can regularly get around here is the plain old BT. I've got a buddy that's got a hookup for Blantons and Eagle rare...but the ER is like $70 and the Blanton is over $100---neither are worth it to me.

I've seen the bowman stuff around and heard good things but have never tried any, may have to give it a shot.

Headed up to Montana for a few days and decided to pick up something semi-local to celebrate the holiday. Not too bad and the nostalgia bumps it up a few extra points. Happy Drinksgiving!

Wife and I had a fantastic Argentinian steak dinner tonight. Now I'm at home enjoying an espresso martini by the fire.
