Ctjoe Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 Ok, picked up a couple Johnny Morris carbonlites with 30 series reels. A Stradic CI4 and abu Garcia revo SX. I hear a lot about braid. I am worried about wind knots, seems they are caused by many things including twitching baits, line going through guides and closing bail at end of cast. They also say sensitivity is great. What line should I start off with. Make and #. It’s for Mainly soft plastics and if I can swing it, another set up with vibrating jig. Btw presently fish maxima ultra green mono ty Quote
Super User RoLo Posted June 9, 2020 Super User Posted June 9, 2020 I worry more about waiting in line, then I worry about wind-knots (What's a wind-knot?). You'll hear various opinions regarding brands of braid, but braided polyethylene is braided polyethylene (I'm currently using Sufix 832). Roger Quote
Jake51823 Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 I feel like 832 #20 is a good place to start your braid experience. Be careful not to throw near rocks as braid gets cut easily. 20 or 30 but that is up to you Quote
Dens228 Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 I'd go with 832 also. I use 30 lb test for the applications you mentioned. Wind knots have not been a problem for me in any way. I think the lower test braids such as 10 and under is where that happens due to the braid being extremely thin and light. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted June 9, 2020 Global Moderator Posted June 9, 2020 I use original Power with no reason to change. Keep in mind, you will lose all sensitivity with any kind of braid made by anyone if you leave any slack between you and the bait. Mike 1 Quote

I keep it on one rod for topwater over milfoil edges 1 Quote

MJinMN Posted June 10, 2020 Posted June 10, 2020 I like Power Pro moss green in 20lb as my all-around but no idea if it's the best. Also, I lost a few baits when I started with braid until I started using palomar knots. Good luck. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted June 11, 2020 Super User Posted June 11, 2020 tuf line domin8 or sufix 832 in 20 lb for spinning Quote
Jleebesaw Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Glad to hear suffix 832 is good. I just bought some today in 20lb. I spooled up a baitcaster and am going to do a spinning reel up with it too. Ive never really messed with braid much either. Quote

Different people have different experiences. I ran 20# Power Pro on my President last year...never had a major issue. Running 40# 832 on my Supreme this year...put mono on the President. Quote
Hook2Jaw Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Berkley X9 is a solid, solid line. Tackletour rated it more highly than Seaguar Smackdown. 1 Quote
NavyVet1204 Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Power pro and Sufix 832 in the 40# test get my vote. However, I changed over to all FC after a couple months of fishing braid due to my preference in setups being better suited for FC. Quote
LCG Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 I am 100% braid to leader. I usually use kastking 10lb hi viz yellow braid on spinning reels and 30 on baitcasting reels. This year I picked up a new spinning reel and spooled it with 20lb 832 in camo. No wind knots so far, have had a few here and there before. May have been the lighter line or other ell, jury is still out. Quote

Super User WRB Posted June 11, 2020 Super User Posted June 11, 2020 Technically Spectra fiber is polyolfin made from highly processed long chain polyethylene. It's not your polyethylene ski rope! Super braid are made from Spectra yarn twisted into strands and braided into line. The braid is white and fuzzy needing additional processing to create a smooth round diameter. The difference between line mfr's is in the processing of finished line. Wind knots are created by line twist, yes braid gets twisted. Tom Quote

We rarely disagree but I have been using 30lb braid for a dedicated Whopper Plopper combo and loving it. Once it’s worn out I will be going down to 20lb braid to max casting distance. My Dad is a big believer in use as light a line as you can get away with. I guess I am a chip off the old block. Kastking Superpower braid all the way! Great 4 stand braid to learn with. It’s cheap on EBay. You can get 150 yard spools for $5 and under on sale. Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 11, 2020 Super User Posted June 11, 2020 It depends on the reel level speed to overlap the line onto the spool so it doesn't dig down into the line underneath. Clearence between the spool and frame to prevent line getting inside. Your ability to manage the line. Finns Slng Braid 30 lb is .009D, 20 lb is .008D, Power Pro 30 lb is .01OD, 20 lb is .009D. I agree, you're moving in the right direction. In addition to longer casting distance, lighter line lets you get by with lighter weight, it offers deeper trolling depths and gives you greater sensitivity overall. I use straight braid, so in my case, a lighter braid is also less visible (least of my concerns). I believe that wind-knots & line-burrowing have as much to do with modus operandi, as with line diameter. Regardless of line-test, I have very, very few issues with wind-knots or line-burrowing. In any case, if I did have an issue with either one, I wouldn't try solving it with heavy braid. The heaviest braid I use is 50-lb test, and only for frogging and punching. Roger 1 Quote

Ogandrews Posted June 13, 2020 Posted June 13, 2020 For spinning setups I’ll usually use 8 or 10lbs suffix 832, I like it a little bit better than normal powerpro for anything over 20lbs I’ll go to powerpro maxcuatro, I think it is the best braid on the market. Casts better and is thinner than powerpro or 832. 65lbs maxcuatro is actually a little thinner than 50lbs normal powerpro. Stay away from super slick, I tried my best to like it but that is honestly one of the worst braids for a casting setup I’ve ever used. Had issues with leader connection knots sticking together with it too, never have an issue with 832 or maxcuatro, or regular powerpro when I have used it for that matter. the one thing I always do when I’m tying a lure straight to braid is double loop around the line tie, then just tie your knot however you would have. Never have line slips doing that. 1 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted June 13, 2020 Super User Posted June 13, 2020 Power Pro Maxcuarto is another good braid from the reviews I have read. For many years I have used the regular Power Pro and it has worked well for me. Would consider trying Berkley X9 since the price is ok and it has good reviews. 1 Quote
