NavyVet1204 Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 I ask out of pure curiosity as to what your purchasing habits are when it comes to fishing gear. What is the lowest and highest you will spend on a rod, a reel, and combos? Do you spend more on the reel vs the rod or Do you try and invest the same amount in each? Are you brand loyal in your rods and reels or do you buy what ever? Do you only buy combo set ups for budget reasons? Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted June 9, 2020 Super User Posted June 9, 2020 Usually around $ 350.00. 1 Quote

Super User Hammer 4 Posted June 9, 2020 Super User Posted June 9, 2020 I've owned more spendy combo's in the past, usually around $ 600.00..but being retired on a small fixed income, I have to look for 1..sales on decent rods and reels, buying last years model sometimes will bring the price down. Shop carefully.. 1 Quote

Shop carefully.. I try and look for reels and rods that I know are good, but not at full price(like most I’m sure). My next reel I’m thinking is going to be a curado k and it is $179.99 at BP right now. Quote
Tizi Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 My most expensive set up, retail, is about $350. What I actually spent is closer to $250. To me the $150 range for each rod/reel is the sweet spot for price/performance ratio. I usually spend about 2/3 of that on sale or $100 each. 2 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted June 9, 2020 Super User Posted June 9, 2020 I'm a cheap bugger - most expensive rig I own retail is $230...my cost was $87 (reel was a gift, rod was gotten on sale) Most I've paid for a rig is $150...my cheapest rig is my backup finesse - $40 Mitchell Avocet RZ combo. 1 Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted June 9, 2020 Super User Posted June 9, 2020 Depends how badly I want something. I never really pay full retail for anything though. I have a couple combos in the $700-$800 range, but that's not necessarily a limit. 2 Quote
Super User RoLo Posted June 9, 2020 Super User Posted June 9, 2020 Min & max price limits hinge on personal budget, which offer little in the way of universal knowledge Between the rod (workhorse) and the reel (line management), I'd up ante on the rod before the reel. Roger 3 Quote
Super User Bird Posted June 9, 2020 Super User Posted June 9, 2020 I'm always around the $100 mark for reels and $120 - $150 for rods.......$250 max. 2 Quote
NavyVet1204 Posted June 9, 2020 Author Posted June 9, 2020 Although I can only speak to reels in the $180 and less range, it feels like a good place to be in with budget for a reel. The most I have ever spent on a rod was my most recent purchase of the Abu Garcia Vendetta 7’3” MHF At $80 from Walmart and it has an Abu Revo SX on it and is a perfect T-Rig setup for me. If I can keep putting them Together like that I can maintain a $250-300 budget and be happy. Quote
Glaucus Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 In times past, $200 on both ends, usually. Now, $100 on both ends. 2 Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted June 9, 2020 Super User Posted June 9, 2020 Don't have a cutoff for rods. I build whatever I want. Reels? right now my line in the sand is Vanquish for spinning and Aldebaran MGL for casting. I will have a Stella or 2 at some point. 1 Quote
Born 2 fish Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 I shop sales and discount codes and usually end up around 400-500 a combo. 1 Quote
Wildbillb Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 $180 for a reel and $150 for a rod....top end. $75 for a both on the bottom. For bass and walleye gear. Pan fish is $30 each piece low end and $100 for a rod top end. $50 for a reel 1 Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted June 9, 2020 Super User Posted June 9, 2020 I've got bass combos as cheap as $67. My most expensive is around $350 but I only paid $80. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted June 9, 2020 Global Moderator Posted June 9, 2020 My most expensive combo is probably $50, but I’ve got a lot of used stuff 2 Quote
kayaking_kev Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 No cut off, as long as I can get it for a good enough price to where I can sell it for what I paid for it. I have $550 rods and $350 reels, but an Ugly Stik Gx2 for moving baits and a Lew's Hank Parker Speed Stick for bottom baits do just fine, and both run $40 each or cheaper. Daiwa Fuego CT or Shimano SLX reels or even an Abu Garcia Black and Pro Max and you're good to go and can catch plenty of fish. 1 Quote

What is the lowest and highest you will spend on a rod, a reel, and combos? Have spent more than I should. Have spent $300 for a new $500 reel. $185 for a used custom rod. Cheaper is better. Have bought a new reel for $30 and new rod for $17. All baitcast. See below for combos. Do you spend more on the reel vs the rod or Do you try and invest the same amount in each? More on reel. Kind of a reel lover. (versus 'real') Are you brand loyal in your rods and reels or do you buy what ever? Buy what interests me. Do you only buy combo set ups for budget reasons? No. Even for budget reasons I would buy separate. 1 Quote
LonnieP Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 My most expensive combo was around 500, but most of them average around 250 to 300. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted June 9, 2020 Global Moderator Posted June 9, 2020 200.00 for a reel and 450.00 for a rod. I’m partial to Shimano reels, no particular preference of rods. I would never at this stage by a combo. Always invest more on the rod. Mike 3 Quote
Hook2Jaw Posted June 10, 2020 Posted June 10, 2020 I've limited myself to 150 for a rod and 150 for a reel. My most expensive setup is a Daiwa Lexa 300 and a Daiwa DXSB 8' Heavy Fast. My least expensive is a Daiwa Fuego CT on a Daiwa Aird-X. I'm also of the belief one should spend more money on the rod. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 10, 2020 Super User Posted June 10, 2020 I have enough equipment so I can exercise patience and save for what I want. I know if I save up $300 for a combo, $600 is also possible and so on. I try to get the best bang for the buck though and never pay full price. 3 Quote
swhit140 Posted June 10, 2020 Posted June 10, 2020 My current most expensive setup is Daiwa Fuego CT w/Falcon Expert rod under $250.00. For me I wouldn't pay over $350 for a rod/reel setup. Most of my rod/reel setups were on sale or discount. I always feel that I spend more on my rods than I do on reels. 1 Quote
