An Unfortunate Series of Events

A few weeks ago, I made a post asking about the trailer hub system that my boat trailer has on it because I'd never heard of it. Says it never needs serviced, but I fish a lot, and I had my doubts. Well guess what? The day after we got back from a weekend of camping and fishing I noticed some bearing grease on one of my wheels. So my Stratos is at the shop waiting for the bearings to be taken care of.

 

In comes the johnboat. It's a solid backup, better than a lot of folks have for their main boat. Like most johnboats though, it lacks storage, so my boxes just sit out while I'm fishing. Thursday was a pretty warm day, although not crazy hot like so many people whined about (Accuweather says it was 88* for a high). Got done fishing, came home and parked the boat in my fairly cool garage. Fast forward to yesterday morning, getting some stuff prepped for this weeks fishing and notice that one of my Pointers in my jerkbait box looks really odd? Pop the box open, oh the horrors. It was not the only one, not even close. At least a dozen were so badly warped or split that they're completely ruined, several more are swelled but I'm hoping are still usable. Not every bait in the box is ruined thankfully, and my other jerkbait box that I had with me was not effected. Some baits were brand new, some were over 15 years old, and from different makers.

 

Best I can tell, it must have been sitting directly in the sunlight during the middle of the day, but it's hard to imagine that 6 hours of sitting in the sun did this much damage to them. These aren't all of them unfortunately, just some of the worst.

Wow, I worry about soft plastics melting in the sun, I never even thought about hard plastics.  What kind of box are you using to store them?  The boxes in the background seem to be for other purposes.  That's bad luck, for sure.

This was a Plano Edge 3700 standard box.

Had that happen a long time ago but not to point of warping just splitting at the seam. Now I either put the box back in the bag or cover it with a towel. Hard way to find out just how harsh Direct Sunlight can be......

I would have never thought it.  Mine are in clear plastic boxes.  I really need to watch them more carefully, I guess.

That is some seriously impressive damage!  I had 1/2 dozen Vision 110s split down the seam once.  Learned my lesson and never store tackle out in the sun anymore.

That really sucks and feel awful for you. Jerkbait box is the most valuable in the boat.

 

Do you think the clear lid on the Edge box vs the opaque lid on a standard Plano led to this? It is possible that the material on the standard planos reflects enough light to keep this from happening.

Does the Plano Edge box breath?

If the air can’t escape as it expands the heat rises cooking the contents like a pressure cooker.

I would contact Plano.

So sad to loose lures you have success with and confidence using.

that sucks. Those aluminum boats get hot.

On my previous boat, my phone was laying on the bare deck after taking some fish selfies.

a couple hours later I tried to pick it up. It was so hot I could not hold it.

after it cooled down I noticed it would not turn on. I took it to AT&T to get checked out.

they said the circuit boards were fried.

As mentioned above, on hot sunny days I cover all my baits with a white towel...  I keep my reels covered as well.  Sorry about the misfortune.

I know that really hurts. Years ago I bought a flat style Plano tackle box with a clear lid to use when I fished in somebody elses' boat. The baits in the top would get so hot you almost couldn't touch them when changing baits. I spray painted the inside of the lid with high heat engine paint and solved the problem.

Wow, I can't say that I've seen that before.

Six hours is not a long time. Now you’ve got me thinking about this.
