I guess I'm still ol'school as I'm not too keen on trying something new/different. One of these days I'll try braided line, and hope it doesn't snap my rods in half, and ruin my reels at the same time.  If I were to try one, what brand would you recommend?

I've spent most of my fishing years using nylon line (better known as mono), which is

the binary term for New York & London. Nylon was a super line in the 20th century,

and remains a super line in the 21st century.

I use braided polyethylene a lot, to put it mildly, and braid will not break your rod,

but will provide a fine diameter line with excellent sensitivity and excellent hook-sets.

Skip the Power Pro and go straight to Sufix 832 - I've already 'upgraded' one of my two braid rigs to 832 and as soon as I have a little more free cash, the second will be switched over as well.

What lb test line do you have on?

On the Medium-Heavy rig, I'm running 40# with a leader of 12# Yo-Zuri Hybrid. The Heavy rig will get 50# (I got 50# Power Pro on it now) with the same leader as the MH.

Regular powerpro at one time was the best braid. Now it's so outdated it's not funny. Why people would use it is beyond me.

I used 100% mono for years. Tried braid and hated it. Now I’m 80% flouro and not going back. I fish mono for certain techniques and only use braid on one rod

I used nothing but mono from the 60s when I started fishing until the late 80s. Added Spiderwire to the mix but was never fully happy with it.

Tried FC - including a couple of the most suggested here brands...didn't like it.

Now I run 2 rigs braid, 4 rigs mono and 4 rigs YZH.

Id also vote for power pro..I use 65lb on my frog rod and have liked it for years. I use mono still and I lean very heavy on copolymer.

I'm currently all mono. I had braid on my carolina rig but took it off.

I didn't mention brand because it wasn't requested in the original post.

I began like most, using Power Pro braid, then moved to Berkley Trilene braid

and ultimately settled on Sufix 832, where I remain today.

Some dislike braid because it "supposedly" floats, but a single grain of sand can reverse that scenario.

Moreover, Sufix 832 has a central strand of Goretex that discourages braid from floating,

even without that grain of sand  ?

More votes for Sufix! What lb test do you use or suggest for top water/cranking/Texas rigging?

I use all three, but prefer to use mono when practical.  Braid to leader (mono leader most of the time) on most spinning rods.  Bait caster I prefer straight braid for punching, and frogging.  Keep going back and forth between floro and mono for crank baits. Most every thing else I use mono.

Favorites are--

Braid-- J braid

Mono- Maxima Ultra Green or Berkly Big Game

Floro - still searching for a favorite.  Currently using Sunline Sniper.

If I could only use one it would be mono.  Fortunately for me and the Bait Monkey there are lots of choices.

IMO, the pivot point is 30-lb test

You would go lower for finesse fishing, smallmouth bass, etc.

You would go higher for punching, frogging, etc.

In freshwater, 50-lb test is typically max.

I am just getting back into fishing after a long hiatus. My first use of braid was yesterday lol. Had some issues with knots on FC leader breaking at the hook, but so far, no issues with the 20# Sufix 832 braid.

I will say it’s not as easy to snip tag ends like mono (you need something that really clips the line clean), and take care pulling on it (it can cut you). But it lays flat and is sensitive.

If I decided to forego braid, I would just respool with Yo Zuri hybrid and never lose sleep.

Having said that, I also never tied a leader knot until yesterday. So far, it’s been a pleasure. Not to difficult to tie and that has not broken.

I'm so back and forth on braid it's not even funny. Right now I'm running mostly Yo-Zuri Hybrid and Big Game.

I've fished braided Cotton, Dacron, Micron, Suture Material (Silk), Micro Dyneema®, Kevlar, Spectra, Gore-Tex, various types of monofilaments, copolymores, & fluorocarbon.

I have 10 rod-n-reels

Punch rod spooled  with 65# Sufix 832 Superline

Frog rod spooled with 50# Yo-Zuri Superbraid

Jig rod spooled with 17# Seaguar InvizX

7 others spooled with 15# Berkley Big Game

Am I 100% mono?

I really don't like braid but fishing thick vegetation it's a must.

I'm trying to like Fluorocarbon but it's negative qualities are hard to overcome.

People love that Big Game. I personally tried it once and it's no longer invited to come hang out with my reels lol. Unfriended it. When I fish mono, I used Stren Original or Trilene XL but rarely use mono.

The only braided lines I use are 832, Power Pro V2, or Smackdown. Invizx is good line. Certain fluorocarbon line makes it unbearable under certain conditions. I have great success with mine but with all things will have positives and negatives

Yep - as backing on my BCs...that's all I use it for.

Two of my four mono-spools rigs are with 10# Stren Original.

For what applications do you use Stren?

Jerkbaits, shallow crankbaits, donkey-rig...any light, surface or shallow running lure.
