Obi_Wan Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 Years ago, I bought a Ml Mod Fast 6’6” rod. I want to use it as a finesse rod, but I always see fast or extra fast being recommended. What will I be missing out on of I use a mod fast rod for finesse fishing? Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 7, 2020 Super User Posted June 7, 2020 A ML Mod. rod (casting I assume) would be great for 3/16 and 1/4 oz crankbaits and depending on manufacture you might be able to get up to a 3/8oz crank. Personally, I like fast rods for jerkbaits, topwater and some soft plastic and x-fast rods for jigs and senkos. Quote

I have all the rods I need for everything else; and then some. ? I guess my question should be why not use it for Ned, finesse jigs, etc... Quote

This (from Tackle Warehouses website) might explain it better than I can but it sums up the same thing I said about a casting rod. In short, I would not use a Mod. Spinning rod for techniques you mentioned for the reasons listed below. Also, when they say Medium or Medium Fast they actually mean Moderate and Moderate Fast. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted June 7, 2020 Super User Posted June 7, 2020 In the big scheme of things, not much depending on the finesse technique in question IMHO. Things like dropshotting seem to have a somewhat equal split between xf and moderate action prescribers; Ned isn't a feel technique the way Ned fishes it, so no biggie there, and sliders have historically been thrown on more moderate action rods. You give up a little feel, but in many cases get better hookup/landing percentages with the small hooks often in play, which also rarely require the stiffer action you get with a fast/x-fast rod for hooksets. Super User RoLo Posted June 7, 2020 Super User Posted June 7, 2020 'Action' designations do not adhere to any industry standard, which tends to confound an otherwise simple decision. More blatantly, some rod-makers offer 4 tip actions, while others offer 5 subdivisions: 4 ACTIONS: Slow - Moderate - Fast - Extra Fast 5 ACTIONS: Slow - Moderate - Moderate Fast - Fast - Extra Fast Bottom-Line: Ignore labels, be selfish, and select on the basis of 'your' loading & response preferences.
