What is a good rod length and action and also what would be a good gear ratio in a reel for shaky head finesse worms? I know I could use any rod and reel, but I am curious as to what the best/better “science” of it is. Also, what would be a good size weight on the jig?

Im thinking a 10-12# FC would be fine as far as line goes. Who makes a good finesse worm in your opinion? I have had luck with YUM cranberry finesse worms in stained water at the lake, but that was pure luck on choice and not something I had the knowledge of basically. I was using a 7’ MHF rod with 30lb braid for not knowing any better as I am still brand new to bass fishing.

Edit: preferably a baitcaster setup!

My shakyhead/finesse baitcaster is an Alphas CT SV and a 6'10" ML Omen. Had a Tatula SV on it, but the Alphas seems more up to the task. I wish the rod had a little lighter tip, but it's a fun rod to fish with.

There's several different options out there. It really depends how much you want to spend, and/or if you want to add aftermarket spools. Once you start down that path, there's no going back.

I’ll admit...I can get carried away just by the “new and shiny” appeal of a rod and reel and seemingly forget what and why I’m shopping for. That’s why I’m looking for answers like yours that give me some direction lol

I'm a sucker for a good deal and often find myself buying a bunch of stuff that's not cohesive in any way. That's why I have like 8 rods in the corner with no reels ?

However, when I'm looking for something specific, I usually start with budget, then work my way down the list with applications, spinning/casting, etc. I like to settle on a rod before choosing the reel. One, because I have an addiction and I like to match colors. Secondly, if it calls for a longer or heavier rod, I may need a heavier reel to balance it all out. I like to get the rod in hand and get a feel for the balance. Typically not as issue with lighter action. Are you going to use it from the bank, boat or kayak? A longer rod may offer better actions, but could be cumbersome on the bank or yak. I don't know how everyone else does it but I'm an aerospace engineer by day, so I tend to overanalyze everything and spend more hours researching a combo than actually fishing it.

As of right now, it’ll mostly see fishing from the bank and some boat. I too over analyze which I don’t believe is a bad thing by no means lol The color matching thing is somewhat secondary to me as I try to match “best reel with best rod” type of thing or what I consider best with best.

Really depends on what size shaky heads you have in mind. If it's 5/16 with a 6 inch worm your jig /t rig rod will work fine

If your looking to throw 3/16 and a finesse worm I see no reason to not use a spinning rod. Personally i use a Yamamoto 7ft medium and 6lb. line.
