So a fellow on Guntersville runs up on another angler's boat while idling along looking at his graphs and talking on his cell phone? I think no one was injured. But I feel like I've entered the twilight zone when I read stuff of this ilk -

I saw that on the YT channel Darien is Fishing, which I assume is the same incident. If not that same guy might have hit two boats. LOL!

I know he said it’s the other guy’s responsibility to pay attention, yada yada, but once I saw an impact was imminent I would have hollered and been on my TM getting out of the way. I would have still give the guy an ear full but tried to avoid the impact.

BTW, is that the Darien that Luke Dunkin seems have a bit of beef with?

It seems more like stupid instead of high tech, and you can’t fix stupid.

The size of today's sonar monitors blocks the view of the boat driver, surprised it doesn't happen more often!

They're doing the same thing is cars. I'm convinced that we're living through the zombie Apocalypse. Folks have their phones constantly in their face and they know what's going on all over the world via social media. They just don't know where they are or what they're doing.

Boating idiots aren’t strictly a product of this era, trust me.

As a kid, I was completely traumatized by this story. A few years before my family started staying at this little $40 a week lake cottage (Probably ‘87-88), there was a horrific boating incident (right near a point that would later become one of my favorite fishing spots...of course...)

A woman and her grandson were paddling along in their canoe around dusk and a distracted boater came blazing down the midlake at high speed. He impacted their canoe so hard that it actually DECAPITATED the grandmother. Can you imagine that level of horror as a kid? It still shakes me to think of that...

Stupidity and recklessness are both time immemorial...

I’ve always been amazed at how many people will run at high speed in heavy fog.   Many years ago I was on Guntersville and the fog was so thick you could’ve see 20 feet past the bow of the boat.   I was fishing near the ramp waiting for the fog to burn off and could hear many boats running at high speed.  When I got home I saw on the news that two guys were kill when they hit a causeway at high speed.  GPS has only made it worse.   It will keep people from hitting a causeway but won’t keep people from hitting me!

Yeah , boating stupidity has and will continue to be a big issue. I think it’s because of several reasons. 1. Alcohol ( No explanation needed ). 2. Boater education. If the same level of liscensing with boating  as is involved with driving was enforced it would help some . Im generally against more laws though , so at least some kind of required boater course would be beneficial. 3. Perception. By this I mean people in general just think boating is easy-they just dont think it’s dangerous- and it can be, especially with all 3 or any combination of the other reasons at work.

Back in my younger days I had my bass boat parked at a girlfriend’s house in her canal. I took her out for a dusk ride. She was up in a creek so we rode out into where the creek got much bigger. Theres a bridge out there, so we went out to it, turned around and started back. We passed a boat on the way back that was flying towards the bridge , full of people on it hollering etc. We went way up a side creek after that and turned off the motor to hear the swamp sounds . Night had fallen , and We started seeing lights on the horizon . We got curious and rode back out to see what was going on. There were a lot of flashing lights out by the bridge. Since we were closer to her house, we went there. Found out the next day the boat we had passed had hit the bridge and a  pretty girl I knew from high school had died- alcohol was involved.... Very sad but avoidable.

Dont even get me started on stupid drivers... I could write a book on all the experiences Ive had with them!!

I drove trucks for a living at one time - I am a coast guard licensed Capt. - most of the mayhem I saw in both jobs was due to ignorance (stupidity?) - How you can let someone get in a boat that runs 60mph without training is beyond understanding. At the minimum all boaters should know the Rules of the Road by heart.

I've put a few men who did this in black bags - the ones we could find anyway . . .
