getting back into bass fishing since i retired, i need one more baitcaster to complete my rods and reels in baitcasting, i currently have the Tatula 100, lews LFS and the Piscifun Phantom, they are all smooth, i was thinking of my next reel, any thoughts on the Shimano SLX, or if most users say the SLX will not be a choice, possible get another Lews LFS, trying to stay under  the 125 dollar range.

thanks

The slx, or the slx xt for a touch more, is by far the best reel at that price point in my opinion. It’s really amazing Shimano made that good of a reel for that cheap, especially with the xt. The regular slx is $99, the xt is $129 and I would for sure say go with the xt it is worth the extra $30 for the upgraded braking and other internals. I love my curados, but there’s not a huge difference between a curado k and a slx xt.

Which rod and baits do you plan on using?

worms, jigs and swimbaits, sort of experimenting at the moment on how these reels cast, of the 3 so far the Phantom and the Lews LFS are nice the Tatula is ok, not a distance reel for me, also i have 2 new TFO professional rods coming in a few days, will see how they stack up, so far i really like this Powell Inferno and second is the Dobyns Fury

The SLX is a good performer for the money.  There are reports of them becoming geary feeling over time.  If this happens to you then you would absolutely regret it.

actually i did read that somewhere, hmm, any suggestions before i make the purchase. if not a SLX or the SLX XT which i was watching a video that the the XT outcast the regular SLX by a minimal distance.still deciding on the Shimano, maybe another Lews LFS or was looking at the Piscifun Phantom X in a 6.3 to 1

hi kicker

yes the phantom is a carbon frame with alum gears, but it is light, and i will find out how it holds up, the phantom x has brass gears, might be worth a shot, i will say the phantom reel cast the best so far of the reels i have, i think the lews LFS might be a bit smoother reeling in lures, but not by much.

I have an MB and just love that reel to pieces. Dangit.

One rig at a time. When I finish what I'm working on now, I might think about getting a new reel. lol

I'd go with the lews if it were me. They just work and I'm basically all lews at this point

Do you like the lews lfs? I just bought one and havent used it yet. Im still crappie fishing.

I throw two. Love 'em. They've taken a beating so far. One a (a 5.6:1) has always sounded a little geary, but I'm too lazy to take it apart to lube up. I should have a reel cleaning sesh tomorrow night.

Yes I have a cple and for the money they're hard to beat. Smooth, work as well as most and affordable.  I use one for a topwater rod for walking baits and poppers and another for a frog, buzzbait rod
