Smells like fish Posted June 2, 2020 Posted June 2, 2020 Catchy title! I know the Bass Professor put out one but has anybody here got any lures resembling snakes? Here is a Lunkerhunt Link in grass snake pattern. Quote
Big Swimbait Posted June 2, 2020 Posted June 2, 2020 I forget who made it but someone made a 7" bait with a snake shaped head and the body of a ribbon tail worm. It was a great topwater bait. I still have some chartreuse ones somewhere in the Bass Hole. Megabass and Savage Gear make snake baits. 2 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted June 2, 2020 Super User Posted June 2, 2020 I thought it was the other way around - snakes catch fish? 3 Quote

Super User scaleface Posted June 2, 2020 Super User Posted June 2, 2020 I have floating snake heads that slide on the line like a bullet weight . Then rig a ribbon tail worm and swim it like a snake . Never have used the things . 1 Quote
813basstard Posted June 3, 2020 Posted June 3, 2020 Lucky enough to catch this 7 on a frog AFTER I heard her blast something..d**n sure looks like a snake to me 2 Quote
JediAmoeba Posted June 3, 2020 Posted June 3, 2020 I have seen countless snakes, big and small, swimming in lakes and ponds...not once have I seen a fish even sniff at them. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 3, 2020 Global Moderator Posted June 3, 2020 Caught a lot of bass on the Snatrix worm and Mann's Hardnose snake. I've actually caught a bass on a live snake once in a pond. Fishing it on the bottom for catfish because catfish will eat anything and I found about a 2' water snake and I needed another bait so why not? Ended up catching a 2.5lb bass on it. 3 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted June 3, 2020 Super User Posted June 3, 2020 The closest I've come is a 10" ribbon tail worm reeled slowly over over weeds, fished weightless. I never caught any large bass with this, but 2 or 3 smaller bass. Havnt used it this way for a while. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted June 3, 2020 Global Moderator Posted June 3, 2020 I used to have some snake topwaters that worked pretty decent and I cleaned a bass with a snake in its throat once. There’s a pond at work where a big bass will follow a 5’ water snake everywhere it swims Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted June 3, 2020 Super User Posted June 3, 2020 I do also remember Doug Hannons snake lure years ago, but I never bought one. In some ways, a weedless snake type lure could work better than a frog in some areas. Maybe a better hookup ratio? 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted June 3, 2020 Super User Posted June 3, 2020 Floating worm as a top water bait over hydrilla has worked. Been a while but I remember the strikes being violent Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted June 3, 2020 Super User Posted June 3, 2020 I had some of those Doug Hannon snake baits years ago - never even got a swirl near than. Over the years I've seen lots of 10" to 15" or so water snakes swimming around and I've never seen a fish hit them. Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted June 3, 2020 Super User Posted June 3, 2020 I recall reading an article years ago in I think Bassmaster magazine about a guy from Georgia, who caught big bass on a home made snake lure. He shaped a bottle cork like slip sinker, painted them and put some varnish on them to harden them. He drilled a hole in them, and slid them on the line ahead of a large worm hook. It looked like a t rig, only with a cork head. The " snake" was a long plastic worm. This caused the head to always float, and could be paused in certain spots. If you watch a snake swim on the surface, most times, the head is just above the surface. When they stop, the tail drops a couple of inches below the surface, and hangs there. I've never tried this, but it doesn't sound like it would be hard to make this floating snake head. I've never seen a bass actually eat a snake. Doug Hannon caught a lot of big bass over thick weeds in Florida years ago. I'm sure it could still work in the right locations. Quote
WVU-SCPA Posted June 3, 2020 Posted June 3, 2020 I followed a 3' water snake down a 200 yard section of bank one day. The reason being was there was a school of bass following it. Not to eat it, but ready to chase anything coming out of cover as the snake would dip into it. Anything coming out from a rock was met with a reaction bite. Quote
Tizi Posted June 3, 2020 Posted June 3, 2020 Savage Gear 3D Snake - I have used it, had a few small nibbles at the tail, but caught nothing on it as of yet. Quote
