So I bought my first baitcaster setup a month ago with an Abu Garcia Revo SX and a bass pro rod. Well today the wife and I found a new fishing spot and just as I started to get some really good bites on my spinner bait the side plate on the reel came off and fell in the water. Spool came out of place and literally dumped the entire spool of brand new Seaguar 15# FC everywhere. Ok, crap happens.....so I clean up the mess and retrieve the side plate(from the bank) get it cleaned up and respooled with more new line and made double sure that the side plate was secured in place. First cast it happened again. All my brand new line was in the water in a knotted mess. My trip was ruined. I just lost $30 worth of brand new FC in 20 minutes time and my new reel was jacked up. I was very livid. I paid $165 for this reel and it crapped out this early?? My local bass pro was about eight miles down the road so we loaded up and went there and they took the reel back for a refund and I bought a Lews Tournament SPL and some more line.

Customer service at BP was amazing. No questions asked on the return even though I bought the reel on their website and not in store. I had read reviews on this reel having this issue before I bought it, but they were few and far between all the five star ratings. Guess I wasn’t immune to getting one of the crap ones. Hopefully the new lews holds up.

edit: I do keep my reels clean and lubed.

Sometimes you get a lemon, even on reputable products.  It stinks, but at least you're back to fishing again and can enjoy your new reel.

No doubt man. I was mostly upset that I had just found a new spot to fish with the wife because the bass were hitting top water like it was going out of style.

That sucks.

I have two SXs, and I've put some time on both of them.

I've heard of this happening, so I've kind of kept an eye on it, and opened them both up to make sure the side plates where latching correctly. No issues yet.  If it one ever pops off without me touching the lever, they'll get taken back immediately.

The crazy part is, if I remember correctly, the SLP is extremely similar to the REVO SX. I think the side plate latches the same way.

It does and I noticed that while I was looking at the reel at the glass counter. I went with the SLP because it was one of the only left hand retrieve reels they had in stock that I was interested in. The other being a Daiwa Tatula 100.

I did purchase the extended service warranty on the lews also.

I’m not sure if you know this or not, but Abu and Lews are made by the same company.

I’ve been told that before

You returned one Doyo reel for another.  Hope this works out for you.

Also are you palming the reel while casting?  In addition to bad casting mechanics this also has a tendency allow your fingers to accidentally activate side plate release mechanisms.  You may want to get into the habit of gripping the rod and placing you index finger on the rod trigger when casting if you don't already.

I actually considered this...but i do not palm the reel while casting. Yes I am aware that I did purchase a doyo reel again. If it goes the same route I will go a different direction although I think it will be fine. I think I may have found a dud reel with the Revo SX.

I’ve been through a few generations of the Revo sx now. I always used them as salmon steelhead reels. They get banged around on rocks on the river bank , bashed around in the boat, fell on while hiking into coastal canyons and covered in roe goo. Yet haven’t had an issue. Perhaps just lucky.

Doyo isn't necessarily the issue, but which Doyo is. If you've transmitted the nomenclature correctly, I'd suggest that you have the wrong Doyo. If that's the case, then the reel you have doesn't include any support for the pinion other than the spool's shaft. In other words, no pinion bearings period. Couple that with an aluminum gear and you'll have a geary feeling reel quicker than you'd like. I've had a few. I speak from experience. Several 2020 models attempt to address this problem with the P2 super pinion, which is a dual supported pinion. I'd start there, and get one with the pin release side plate. It won't fall off.

Both K-Mart and Sears had the policy of the customer is always right and used thier customer base as quality control. Sounds good until you realize the manufacture didn't have Quality control cost, you were.

Where are these companies today....gone.

BPS has the business policy relaying on the customer for QC playing the same % game.

Good luck buying from Doyo.

I'm not really a fan of abus spinning reels but I have 4 of the previous gen revo sx and have had great luck with them.

I kind of have mixed feelings about Abu's baitcasters.  I currently own 3, Winch Gen. 4, Revo Toro Beast and the ALF.  These three reels have been great for me but I have had three other Abu's that got returned, STX Gen. 4, Revo Premier Gen 2. and a STX 1st Gen.

The three I am currently fishing have had no issues.  The ALF is one of the funnest reels I have fished.

The others though, the biggest let down was the new STX.  It's just felt cheap and not smooth.  It didn't cast well and the casting was not consistent.  What surprised me though was that the Winch was not the same way at all.

I get the sense that getting a good reel from Abu is possible but there also seems to be a good chance that you could get a bad one.  So I guess, buyer beware on Doyo reels.

Yeah I definitely understand man. I don’t want to sound like I am tarnishing or defaming Abu at all. I have owned their reels for a long time in the spinning arena and they are still working today, but not everything is perfect all the time and it was just my turn I guess lol

I've owned 5 Revo Premiers (3 gen1, 1 gen 3, 1 gen1 spinning).  I've also owned 2 Verdict rods, a gen1 vendetta, a gen 1 villain, and I currently have an Ike crank rod.  None of these products have been impressive and most have had some sort of issue.  Only reason I got the Ike was because it was $50 and I wanted an 8xd rod. It's performed the best out of everything.  Regardless, I'm definitely over Abu.

Pure Fishing I believe. They bought up a ton of the lower and mid level fishing companies. In addition to Abu Garcia and Lews, they also have Berkeley, Pflueger, Penn, Shakespeare, and Fenwick.

Doyo Korea.  Lews and Abu order their reels from them.  Abu appears to use a exclusive platform. Lews uses more commonly available Doyo platforms.

Doyo does all the design, development and production on the reels.  Lews and others just order them from them with their name on the outside.  Abu does a little more in that they will insist on IVCB braking on some reels which I believe is Abu developed but I could be wrong.

It looks like Pure Fishing owns the brands but they (and Bass Pro) have Doyo Korea do the manufacturing. LoL

If you like them that's really all that matters. I like mine and they could come from Santa's workshop made by elves for all I care.

If there is an issue with any of my Lew's reels I am confident Lew's customer service will take care of me.
