Dobyns fury 734

How does this rod perform with 1/8-1/4oz Texas rigs with plastics? Dobyns doesn’t list Texas rigs as a technique on this rod, not that that means anything but I’m wondering how this rod performs with the weight range listed above.

I think it's rating is 1/4 - 1 oz. so 1/8 - 1/4 would be a little lite. But mine is due in tomorrow, and we are forecast to actually have a few days without rain! So I'll try to get it rigged up, if the Diawa Fuego CT comes in, and try it with something 1/8th oz.

I picked up this rod a couple of months ago (casting) and liked it so much I got the spinning model as well. 1/8 oz is perhaps a little light but when I fish a 1/8 oz bullet weight, then adding in weight of hook and plastic bait, it is manageable to cast. Fishing the bait, feeling it and setting the hook are all no problem.

You can get away with a little less than 1/4 oz...say 3/16 oz IF your throwing a bulky and/or dense plastic on it, like a senko, beaver, etc...  1/4-3/4 is this rods wheelhouse. I'd drop down to a 733 if your going to be mainly using 1/8 and 1/4.

I just got done throwing a Texas Rig on my Champion XP 734 which is close in action to the Fury 734. The Colt and Sierra 734 are slower rods.

 

I used an 1/8th oz. bullet weight and a 3/10 oz plastic craw, so it was close to 3/8 oz total, with a Shimano SLX DC reel and the rod did great with it. I got good casting distance and didn't miss on a hook set. 

 

Most plastic is going to have some weight to it, unless your throwing a TRD, or small finesse worm. 

 

So the 734 would be fine, but so would the 733. Being more of a Northern guy, I personally prefer the 3 power Dobyns rods, while the Southerners who fish more cover and sometimes for bigger bass will prefer the 4 power.

 

I only threw the T-Rig tonight on my 734c because I had it with me to throw the Jack Hammer and the only other rod I brought was a Glass crankbait rod, or else I would of preferred to of thrown it on my 3 power Dobyns or even my Medium Tatula.

Never owned a fury but I own lots of sierras and champions. The 733 is a little light for t rigs for my liking a 734 should be perfect. I had no issues throwing t rigged paca slime with a 1/8th oz pegged tungsten on my 735 Sierra so you shouldn’t have any problem with the 4. At least with the Sierra and champions the rods have a nice soft tip and then transfer into a strong backbone so it really helps casting even light baits.

I own a 734 Fury and a 743 Kaden. My 734 fury is great at 3/8 and 1/2 oz jigs and anything under 3/8 goes on the 743 Kaden. I was throwing a 1/4 oz swinghead with a rage bug on the 743 Kaden and it felt perfect. The 734 Fury feels a bit too stiff for 1/4 and less imho.
