flipflops Posted May 31, 2020 Posted May 31, 2020 This is my bf's rod and reel. Any clue what it is? I want to figure out what it is and get him something top of the line over it for bass fishing. 1 Quote
Super User J._Bricker Posted May 31, 2020 Super User Posted May 31, 2020 Gonna say the reel is a Lew’s @flipflops, and pure speculation is that’s probably an 8’6” salmon/steelhead rod with micro guides. Sorry I can’t help with manufacturer. Hopefully some other BR members can point ya in the right direction. Good luck and good fishing to you and your friend Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted June 1, 2020 Super User Posted June 1, 2020 Looks like a Lew’s Hypermag reel. $299.00 Your a real good friend with deep pockets if you are trying to get him something better. https://www.lews.com/sites/default/files/2018-11/hypermag.jpg Quote
walleyecrazy Posted June 1, 2020 Posted June 1, 2020 Appears to be Lew’s hyper mag reel on a Cashion Elite rod. I can’t say 100%, but that looks a lot like the logo on my Cashion rod. Quote
Super User Teal Posted June 1, 2020 Super User Posted June 1, 2020 Lews hyper mag and cashion elite series rod. Next level up would be cashion John crews signature rods. Lews Pro Ti for the reel. New cashion john crews rod 239. New lews pro ti 349.00 Another hyper mag 299.00 Hes pretty lucky to have you! Quote
flipflops Posted June 1, 2020 Author Posted June 1, 2020 Are there upgrades from this that are worthwhile investments? Thanks I just want to get him things he will love and use! Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 1, 2020 Super User Posted June 1, 2020 Contact site sponsor DVT for a custom built rod certificate. Tom 1 Quote

Super User RoLo Posted June 1, 2020 Super User Posted June 1, 2020 JJ, you're a real schmoozer, but I agree with you ? Quote

I sold 3 rods and reels last year, and I have 11 left. I'd throw every one of them in the junk pile if it meant making my wife happy. She's that important to me. And yes, I'd do it on my birthday. Does @flipflops BF think any differently? I don't know. jj 1 Quote
flipflops Posted June 1, 2020 Author Posted June 1, 2020 Do if i go with the lews pro ti, which rod the cashion crews has a few diff models and sizes i see? Would this be the best top of the line setup? Quote

Would this be the best top of the line setup? Yes, the crews rods are the top of the line Cashion rods. They are all of equal quality, but they all serve a different purpose for bass fishing.. but the rod I personally would choose would be the 7'2 MH worm/jig rod. Generally those kind of rods are all purpose rods that almost all of use get alot of use out of. I dont have a Cashion, but I hear they are great rods. I would be thrilled to get it as a gift. Quote
Ogandrews Posted June 1, 2020 Posted June 1, 2020 If you really want to make him happy get him a Shimano expride and a bantam mgl. Lews makes good reels but get him a good Shimano and he’ll be a happy man. Another option that if I was getting the gift I would prefer is that you get him a really nice rod and let him get the reel so he can get exactly what he wants. For the rod take the money you would have spent on a combo and get him a G loomis NRX or GLX, or a St croix legend extreme. I am super picky on what reel I want, but I would be jumping for joy with any of the rods I mentioned. It’s hard to go wrong with a 7-7’3” MH or heavy if he is in to bass fishing. Quote
Super User Teal Posted June 1, 2020 Super User Posted June 1, 2020 @flipflops I hope our info last night helped. If not the lews pro ti/john crews rod, then above comment about just getting him a Gloomis NRX rod or GLX rod and no reel, would be my only.other suggestion. They are very expensive but almost all of us would agree that that would be AWESOME. In bass fishing community NRX ans Glx rods by gloomis are held in the highest regards. But I think he will be thrilled to get the Lews Pro Ti and Cashion Elite John crews Signature rod. 1 Quote
flipflops Posted June 1, 2020 Author Posted June 1, 2020 Will the lews pro ti be a decent upgrade over what he has right now? And yes this has been awesome help! AND if I go with the G Loomis Rod - which size and weight? He is taking a trip to the Chick in July and want him to have a nice setup for that! 1 Quote

Honestly it's the most expensive reel Lew's makes. How much of an upgrade it is from the second most expensive reel they make is up for debate. Hey I recognize you now. You asked about his birthday in another thread. Are you paying for the trip to Chick as well? If you are and it doesn't work out between you and the boyfriend I think you will have a line of suitors from this forum. 1 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted June 1, 2020 Super User Posted June 1, 2020 It's barely an upgrade over the hyper mag. Both are the flagship reels. 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted June 1, 2020 Super User Posted June 1, 2020 @flipflops IF you go with the Loomis instead you have a couple options. There are two rod lines.. one is the Glx line. They start around 450. They are excellent rods, some of the best for a long time. then they have the NRX. They start around 530. Nrx is a dream for most guys... Both line ups have an offering in 7 foot or 7 foot 1 inch. I think both have a 6'8 offering as well. I personally would get him a MH ( medium heavy rod) it should say MBR Or JWR. Easy to find on tacklewarehouse and on American Legacy Fishing. 6'8 to 7'1 MH ROD. That's gonna be the most useful tool and most universal in my opinion and experience. Quote

Haha yep thats me and yep that is part of his gift too. Is LEWS the best and top of the line when it comes to reels? 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted June 1, 2020 Super User Posted June 1, 2020 If you get more info from his fishing buddy on maybe what rod he would like or need...then that would be helpful... otherwise I'd just go with the most universal rod I can think of...which is what I listed about...it would allow him to use multiple techniques 1 minute ago, flipflops said: Haha yep thats me and yep that is part of his gift too. No. While lews is a great company and I have more than a half dozen of their reela... there are 2 other companies that make absolute killer reels... daiwa and shimano make great reels.. But...lews top of the line reels are just that .. top of the line Quote
flipflops Posted June 1, 2020 Author Posted June 1, 2020 I want to def look into the G Loomis rods. I want to get the best of the best for him! Quote

Is LEWS the best and top of the line when it comes to reels? I love Lew's reels but no they are not the top of the line. Their flagship reel, the Pro TI is under $400. Many other companies like Shimano and Daiwa make reels that cost more than twice that much. If your boyfriend has a Lew's hypermag I am sure he will be thrilled with a Lew's Pro TI unless he doesn't like the color purple. That reel has purple handle knobs and accents. 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted June 1, 2020 Super User Posted June 1, 2020 I personally would be freaking ecstatic to get a NRX. Good luck flipflops. Let us know if you need anything And dont forget after you give him his gift to show him how to get on this forum.... we'd love to have him on here too! This is one big family and for alot of us has been a great way to learn alot and pick eachothers brains. 1 Quote
flipflops Posted June 1, 2020 Author Posted June 1, 2020 Yeah the purple is a little off putting to me but haha he might not care that much. Quote
