BornXEyed Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 I'm going to sand down the bottom of my flat bottom jon to bare aluminum and coat the bottom in either: Marine Tek Gluvit Waterproof Epoxy Sealer (http://www.marinetex.com/gluvit.html) OR Hurculiner truck bed liner From what I've read, Hurculiner is okay but causes reduced drag and more added weight, though it has worked for a few restorations. The Marine Tek sealer seems like the way to go. Just wondering if anyone has some experience with either? Or any other recommendations? Quote
basscat1102 Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 PPG makes some awesome 2 part epoxy sealers. Its just like spraying another coat of metal if applied properly. The only down side is they have to be sprayed out of a paint gun. If you choose this method, make sure you follow al directions and spray several coats. Quote
Georgia Jeff Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I've used gluvits before. It is awesome! You just sand around the leaky rivets, mix it together, and then paint it on with a paint brush. My boat never leaked again. I swear by the stuff. If my boats ever start leaking again I will be using gluvits again. You can't go wrong with the stuff. Quote
BornXEyed Posted March 5, 2009 Author Posted March 5, 2009 thanks Jeff. the more i read up, i'm now thinking of just stripping off the old paint and only sealing the rivets versus coating the entire hull. couple questions: did you use gluvits on the inside or outside of the hull? only the rivet areas? have you attempted to paint over the gluvit sealed areas and aluminum? Quote
Georgia Jeff Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 I used it on the outside only. I covered the rivets and areas around it a few inches or so out. I never bothered painting over it because it was an old jon boat and I didn't care what it looked like. I figured since it was in the water all the time no one would see it anyway. Quote
BornXEyed Posted March 6, 2009 Author Posted March 6, 2009 Cool, that's what I'm figuring now. Why bother painting if it's an old boat that'll be in the water most the time. Gluvits dries clear right? Quote
JKay Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 I'm going to sand down the bottom of my flat bottom jon to bare aluminum and coat the bottom in either:Marine Tek Gluvit Waterproof Epoxy Sealer (http://www.marinetex.com/gluvit.html) OR Hurculiner truck bed liner From what I've read, Hurculiner is okay but causes reduced drag and more added weight, though it has worked for a few restorations. I've used it on several boats and it's awesome stuff. Tough as hell and seems to remain flexible. Just use it on the bottom. It works great to seal small leaks as well as building up a sacrificial wear coat for the bottom of the boat. If you drag your boat occasionally like I do go a little heavy on the drag points on the bottom. Gluvit doesn't have any UV properties, so a top coat may be needed. I store my jon boat upside down, so I top coated with an aluminum colored paint and it blended well with the aluminum color of the boat. Quote
Sharkbite Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Hey my aluminum jon boat was a mess leaking like crazy I used fascos epoxy out of florida and it worked great. It also cames in colors. Quote
