I've heard some people saying that they are throwing chatterbaits now in lieu of spinnerbaits even in windy conditions where spinnerbait is known to be the go-to bait. Does that apply to you also? I'm not very confident about using a spinnerbait like others do as I rarely caught many bass with it, but with a chatterbait, I've landed some nice ones. What say you?

I must be old school, I always have a spinnerbait tied on.  I am the opposite of you and have only caught 1 fish on a chatterbait.

I like using single blades almost exclusively.  If I am using a tandem, it’s almost always a double willow - like a War Eagle screaming eagle.

Caught more fish with a spinnerbait than any other bait, have one tied on year around.

In the waters I fish spinnerbaits are leaps and bounds ahead of chatterbaits.

Give both a try.

They fish similarly but in no way does one replace the other.  A spinnerbait is way more versatile.  If you are just chucking it out and burning it back, sure, they are similar.  But a spinnerbait can go and fish where a chatterbait only dreams.

I have a few chatterbaits, and over 100 spinnerbaits in inventory.

I'll echo this...not quite the same numbers for me but I have probably 20 bladed jigs and 75+ spinnerbaits. I have success with both but spinnerbaits still produce better day in and day out. A swim jig is like a finesse version of both of those to me. My order for a moving jig bait would be spinnerbait..swim jig (close second)...bladed jig (distant third)

Nothing can replace a spinner bait for me...May be my overall favorite confidence bait

When I was fishing with a local guide named Ken Penrod awhile back, he told me - hope I'm quoting him correctly :) - he'd typically throw a spinnerbait to an area that has some structure to make it more effective. Where do you throw your spinnerbaits?

Been fishing spinnerbaits for a while.

Own a pretty serious inventory and have had some success with them.

Been fishing Vibrating jigs only a couple of seasons.

The inventory is modest but growing a bit each year.

I've had some success with them as well.

While I could fish both baits in some of the same situations & locations, definitely not all of them.

IME - the V-Jig can be effective in some fairly cool to even cold water, (45 degrees and lower),

something I rarely do with a spinnerbait.

Conversely, Burning a spinner bait at warp speed just under the surface for late summer brown bass,

is in my top 5 favorite ways to get bites, but not a presentation I can use a V-Jig for.

They can't handle the 'speed' needed to illicit strikes.

I'll keep fishing them both as the situation dictates.

I am a big spinner bait fan.  I haven't fished a chatterbait very much.  I bought one a few years ago to try.  I didn't catch any bass on it, but it sure worked on the brown trout.  The same day and location the brown trout crushed the chatterbait, the brown bass attacked a jerk bait.  I guess you never know, with fishing.  The bait Monkey talked me in to buying a couple Chatter baits, so I will have to give them another try.  Even if they work great, I'm sure they wont replace my spinner baits.  Just another tool in the box.

I always have a spinnerbait as well as a bladed jig tied on. As others have pointed out, I too fish them in different situations/conditions.

I have come around to the chatter bait movement and caught some decent fish on them, but spinner baits are still effective and have a place in my tackle arsenal.

I would not expect bladed jigs to supplant over-spinners. but like any other lure, they have their place.

Frankly (hope no one is reading this), I'd much rather toss a soft swimbait than either one of those.

I like using both, but I feel that the spinnerbait has the advantage of being more weedless than a stardard bladed jig.

Ive usually got both rigged but I'll almost always start with a spinnerbait and will stick with one longer if I'm not getting bit than a bladed jig.

If I had to choose only one it would be a spinnerbait. I have caught far more fish on a spinnerbait than a chatterbait. I do think chatterbait might be a better choice in murky water.

Not me . I have yet to catch a bass on a chatterbait .

Me either. A chatterbait will never replace a spinnerbait for me.

Spinner is always my starter - if it's not producing, then I'll change to a chatter. Both have their place, one isn't going to replace the other in my box.

Id much rather pitch a jig, or a rage bug/craw, or topwater bait.   That's just what I like, but I can't count how many spinner bait fish I've caught over the past 16 years. In the beginning I was like a lot of new guys and pretty much stuck to pitching plastic under docks, c rigs on points, and top water everwhere.. But somewhere along the way I learned I started picking up different techniques and putting it together .. Spinner baits really began to click for me 10 years ago.  I've caught more on a spinnerbait the last 10 than any other type of.lure.    I've had spells when a sof t swim bait seen more action  than the spinnerbait, but I don't see chatter bait surpassing it.   I do fish a chatter bait some, but it's not one that I have a specific stick for.  Kinda like the soft swim bait, it has its place for situational.fishing for me..just not to the level that I do with spinnerbait

open water i toss the chatterbait but when  i see a lay down a spinnerbait is my choice. chatterbaits gets hung up very easily.

The amount of bass caught on a spinnerbait compared to a chatter bait, for me is about 200 to 1, in favor of the spinnerbait.

never caught nothing with the spinner or chatter..i keep tossing them in hopes of them working as supposedly they are good lures, but aint caught nothing with them yet. texas rig or crankbait does it for me.  my spinnerbait is beautiful, just cant catch nothing with it.

No, they're different baits with different uses in different situations for me.

Bladed jigs have done much more to displace squarebills in my boat than spinnerbaits.

I have confidence in spinnerbaits. Based on that alone, spinnerbaits will not be replaced by chatterbaits anytime soon.

As a confirmed junk fisherman, when I leave the dock I generally have 20 or so rod rigged up ready to throw, and chatter bait and a spinnerbait are almost always in the mix.  The prior post about a chatter bait replacing a square bill is pertinent - I make my choice in that area based on the vegetation I'll be throwing into.  If there are more than a few green weeds, I 'll throw the chatter bait.   Unless I am of the opinion that I can keep the square bill over the  vegetation most of the time, in which case I'll probably throw the square bill, unless I choose a lipless crank.  Lots of choices,   . .  too little fishing time.

Oh yeah, what is the water color in these situations.  A body of water that is stained to muddy all the time fishes different than water that is generally clear, but currently kinda stained due to rain/wind stuff going on.  One  lake I've fished alot over the years often has a water visibility of 6 to 10 feet, sometimes more in mid summer.  3 or 4 days of rain puts a stain into that water that seems to just shut the fishing off.  It just seems that the fish in that particular lake are more dependent on feeding by sight and the 1 to 3 feet of visibility weirds them out for a few days.   So, one example, for me at least, of how different conditions might influence  spinnerbait/chatterbait/square bill/ lipless crank applications.
