I've gotten two of my rods supplied by Amazon - two others ordered through Amazon were drop-shipped from the actual merchant.

Both rods came is square, cardboard boxes, but were well padded with bubble-wrap and crumpled brown paper. Both came to my door intact with no issues.

I've ordered 3 or 4 from them and had 1 banged up and broken. They do not pack them well at all in my opinion. One I received was in a big square box with little to no padding or filler and the rod was attached inside to the wall of the box with packing tape.

Their packaging of rods is definitely less than ideal. I ordered a 7'6" Daiwa Tatula Elite AGS through them earlier this year. It arrived in an extremely flimsy 2"x2"x8' carboard box with no padding whatsoever inside. The rod was just in the plastic bag and rod sleeve that they usually come with. Much to my disappointment I opened the box to find the rod snapped into 2 peices. It was amazing to see a rod of that price packaged so poorly.

I’m not sure about amazon, but I ordered rods of different calibers from basspro and all of them came packed in cylindrical cardboard tubes with plastic end caps and bubble wrapped. All has been well so far.

All my rods from Amazon came in a square long box. They arrived bend but in one piece. Not the best packaging for sure. Definitely risky. One rod looked like someone had stepped on two of the guides. Fortunately it was a spinning rod so I was able to bend them back.

A couple of Fenwick HMG's from the Amazon folks.

I would have preferred a tube, but they were well packed in a box.

I've ordered 3 rods in the recent past via Amazon and all came heavily casted, no issues.

Ive ordered 3 rods thru Amazon.  The first was fine,  the second they forgot half of my 2 piece rod (they made it right) and the third arrived broken in a square box.  The box was not damaged.  Since the box wasn’t damaged they didn’t replace, I was out a few hundred bucks.  Next time I crease the box before I send them pictures.

I have purchased 3 rods over the years through Amazon, because the local shops don't carry what I wanted (Eagle Claw Featherlight).  All come in a long square box, and unpadded.  One rod tip was in fact broken on arrival -- the box was perfectly fine.  The tip was broken inside the manufacturer's bag, still sealed.  But, Amazon replaced it without any hassle, EXCEPT that I had to expend time to ship it back for their mistake.  Reading the above shows that they didn't heed my advice.

On the other hand, I purchased from Sportsman's Guide without any complaints.

I think it depends on whether they ship from an Amazon facility or one of the many retailers that have an Amazon store.

I think it's more like what side of the bed they got up on.

I ordered 1. Boomerang line cutter 2. 600yd spool of Yo-Zuri Hybrid 3. 150yd spool of Sufix 832 50# Neon Lime. They shipped the first two items in a box (empty-no packing at all) arrived a few min. ago. The Sufix is in another box arriving tomorrow, hopefully. The line cutter and Yo-Zuri can fit in the palm of my hand...look at the size of the box they used...lol. I wonder what box the Sufix will come in...? ?

Amazon puts its name on the box.  It's all Amazon at that point.

Ordered a Tatula spinning rod from Amazon in the past and it was shipped in a crappy weak box.  I was surprised the rod wasn’t damaged but it was fine.  That’s the first and last time Im doing that.

Just ordered a rod for the first time from Amazon. Packaged in a carboard box. Broken tip.

Was sold by "Amazon.com Services LLC" so they better replace it.

I typically buy from my local tackle shop, and if not that then ALF or TW. And this reinforces those decisions.

There's a few vendors on Amazon who ship properly. I've bought rods on Amazon that were 'Sold and Shipped by Evike' - and they came in tubes.

Unless it's sold and shipped by a tackle shop, I won't purchase rods from Amazon.

There’s not enough packaging in the world to counteract the freight is handled. Any business that ships rods knows there will be a level of loss that needs to factored in. If they don’t they won’t be around long.

They will. Over and over again but will continue to just chuck it in a box and ship it.

Good chance the rod will come broken because their packaging for rods is some of the absolute worst, but they'll keep replacing it until they run out, you quit trying, or you actually get one intact.

I ordered a couple of surf rods off Amazon. One arrived with a broken guide insert. They told me to keep it and refunded me the money. It was about $200.

10/10 experience, would use again.
