Eddie101 Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 I can be clumsy sometimes, and just to be safe in my future outings, I've been thinking about investing in one - or few - of those. Do you use one for yourself, and if you do what would you recommend? Do they even work as supposed to? Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 They definitely work, the charitable organization I volunteer for uses them on their rods. Honestly most of my baitcasting setups float. For me, whatever is not on the deck of my kayak is tied down in some manner. Quote
Hook2Jaw Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 Kayaker here, I don't use rod floats or tether my gear. I've tried it and really don't enjoy the line on my spinning rods slapping the foam, nor the added weight messing with balance I've become accustomed to. Quote
Deeare Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 I use them. Saved me over $1000 the one time I flipped my kayak. 1 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 28, 2020 Super User Posted May 28, 2020 nope. I'll take my chances. If i am paddling through an area that i may lose the rod or flip the kayak then i will fasten things down but for the most part I am not worried. Not a fan of leashes at all either as they are just one more thing to get tangled up in should you flip. Quote
Scrapiron Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 Another kayaker here.. don't use floats, but do use a leash on setups not in my hand. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted May 28, 2020 Super User Posted May 28, 2020 Canoe here and given the number of rigs I have (10) they're leashed when in the racks. I'm on a tight budget, so losing almost $1000 in rigs if I flip would be devastating to me. The only time a rig isn't leashed is when it's the one in hand...don't use floats either. 1 Quote
evilcatfish Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 I used to not worry about floats or tethers, but the loss of a Daiwa px type R/Phenix rod combo changed all that. If I’m in a kayak or canoe, tethers or floats are used. Quote
Tizi Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 I leash the rods I am not using if I am in a deep lake, deeper than I can dive safely to retrieve them if I flip over. Quote
Manifestgtr Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 Roland Martin uses them. Hay, if they’re good enough for him... 1 Quote

JediAmoeba Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 2 of us have been going out in a 12' flat bottom boat on some waters with unlimited HP boats in water 60'+ so I fashioned some pool floats on my rods not in hand because it gets a little hairy out there at times. My tackle is tied to a flotation cushion. Quote

I should get some of those for my frog or toad rods. There are days when those bites are good that I walk back limping after swinging away (and missing every other fish). There’s something about those hook sets. Between the adrenaline and knowing you have to hit em hard, they’re just so impactful 1 Quote

After you break them the first time , they heal back stronger , so you really don't need the cushion. If you haven't broken ribs setting the hook you haven't completely devoted yourself. It's like a callus only with bones.? 2 Quote
