Living in northern iowa I have access to walleye bluegill and crappie pretty readily so that's why I don't keep bass. I just prefer the other fish over them so I release bass to fight again. We also have yellow perch up here which may be my favorite fish in freshwater..like em even better than walleye.

Bass is fine, but can't hold a candle to Walleye as far as my taste goes.

Have you ever eaten Tripletail?   Delicious!  Dolphin (Mahi Mahi) is my personal favorite.

YES! I would have counted it up there with Red Snapper but Ive only had it once.( Grouper are in that camp too, but I dont get them very often.)

Ive eaten Mahi , but again, not something I get much., but its definitely up there as well.

It all boils down to personal taste, BUT, there are 2 big flies in the ointment:

1) Some people do not like the taste of fish (these folks pursue fish that taste like chicken & use condiments liberally)

2) As per cliche: Some people's taste, is all in their mouth  ?

The thing that gets me is when people try to tell everyone that bass are nasty to eat when they have never eaten them. Typically in my area it’s tournament anglers or strictly bass only anglers that treat them like Hindu cows and can’t stand the thought of guys like me killing them. That’s why this worldwide forum is so awesome, before I found bass resource I was beginning to think I was the only person in the world that ate bass. I’ve caught some major flack and been just about blacklisted on local forums. I’ve also had people at boat ramps literally tell me not to eat bass. I mean what in the world is that all about????

My inlaws from MN don't eat either LMB or Smallmouth claiming they are to mushy and fishy tasting. Up north walleye and crappie are primary fried fish table fare with lake trout preferred as baked fish. Pike and musky being too bony filleting, ok when baked.

I grew up eating trout, bass and crappie, bluegill to much trouble to clean.

When my inlaws came out to visit my asked me to keep some fish for dinner and cooked them on the BBQ like we do with Wishbone Italian dressing and lemon. My inlaws said they liked the fish wanted to know what fish it? Firm white meat and mild tasting like thier walleye. I told them LMB from out colder clear water lakes taste pretty good don't they!

Sometimes it's a mind set. Me I don't like catfish too soft and mushy!

Trust me, I know the drill

My wife often gives me a taste test, where I'm confronted with two fillets of unbeknownst species.

Perhaps my taste is all in my mouth, but largemouth bass boast a high score among freshwater fish.

The only freshwater fish I'd put ahead of bigmouth bass is yellow perch (not walleye) & bluegills.

In saltwater: Blackfish, red hake (Nickname 'garbage belly'), dolphin & seabass

(fresh-caught of course, not restaurant-bought).

Some amount of bass will spawn all summer  - they're just big sunfish.  I like bass, crappie, white bass, bluegill and catfish, not necessarily in that order. I'm just too lazy to clean fish lately.

Oddly enough Tom, I have the exact same mindset.

The only fish (fresh or saltwater) I've ever tasted that was mushier or more muddy-tasting than catfish,

was winter flounder from the Shrewsbury River (about 50 years ago).

If it's soft & mushy it ain't cooked right ?

Best tasting freshwater is Crappie fried or on the grill cooked in Italian dressing.

Best tasting saltwater is crab, oyster & shrimp stuffed Flounder.

My favorite ocean fish are fresh caught wahoo (Oho), dorado (Mahi Mahi), Yellowtail and Albacore BBQ'd.

Caught, iced and cooked with a few hours. Baja Pacific coast has a lot of great eating fish cabrilla, dog tooth snappers, Pargo, Sierra cooked Mexican style.

Fresh water Striped bass are good eating.

I like to catch and eat fish!

I grew up on a river and a decent size farm pond and we ate fish liberally.

The family fought over bluegill and Crappie, way better than LM. Imo

We even ate fall fish and horny heads but boney.

Personally.....give me flounder or red snapper.

Probably the best fish I ever had was at fish place in Wisconson. Fresh walleye. I'll eat bass, and crappie are another favourite. I have a brother in law who quit bass fishing to strictly fish for bream. He fillets them, and they are pretty good. He also likes the liberal limits on them, and keeps his freezer well stocked with bream fillets.

I don’t eat too many bass, unless it’s one that I’m pretty sure isn’t gonna make it ( deep hooked etc.), Around here, walleye are the king of “eater fish”, although a nice pike from cool water if filleted correctly tastes the same to me, and they’re easier to catch ?. My favourite white fleshed fish is either perch or crappie, but I am a sucker for a fresh Georgian Bay salmon or trout on the bbq with a nice maple syrup glaze.

I like walleye, but we don't get them around my area too much. There's a restaurant called Colverts, that sells a walleye dinner each year at Lent. They advertise it TV. I always tell.my wife," let's go down there for walleye dinner!

What about yellow perch? I caught some in Iowa years ago, and we fried them for breakfast. Pretty good!

If you like fish, I'd recommend a Mr. Twister electric fillet knife. Fillets are the only way to go.

Best fish to eat is one I catch and some one else cleans and cooks it.

Once you eat fresh wahoo - you know how they got the name.

That is true, but most never get the opportunity to taste wahoo, yellowtail snapper or tripletail.

I have captured the elusive yellow tail snapper. Talk about a weird way to fish! Throw handfuls of sand and oats into the water, free spool the bait into the sand cloud, and reel in your fish when you get bit without setting the hook
