CountryboyinDC Posted May 25, 2020 Posted May 25, 2020 Most of the male members of my family have served in the military back to the Civil War. I'll just name a couple of non-family members that I knew that were KIA on missions that I was on. Both obviously received Purple Hearts. CW5 James Weeks, Meritorious Service Medal (1 OLC), Air Medal (V device, 1 OLC), 160 Special Operations Aviation Regiment, died 16-May-2006. SGT Steven Ganczewski, Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star (V device), 2nd Platoon, A Co., 3/75 Ranger Regiment, died 17-Nov-2007. 2 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted May 26, 2020 Global Moderator Posted May 26, 2020 I dont know much of my family history, would have to defer to my aunt as she is the expert on all that. I believe she said the oldest recorded relative she found was John Woods, a union soldier killed in battle and buried in Virginia. Dad and grandpa both served and made it out alive, only to both die young upon returning. God be with all the others lost in battle and their families. 1 Quote
schplurg Posted May 27, 2020 Posted May 27, 2020 Renato Massei - WW2. My great uncle (grandfather's brother). Battle of the bulge and was there for concentration camp liberation. That part haunted him for many many of his 95 years. I know little else about his service. Came from Italy, joined the circus and was a sword swallower and razor blade eater (yikes!) while he learned English, then joined the military when the time came. 1 Quote
