My abu garcia revo sx has been making a really loud grinding gear noise when i cast, it hasnt been on every cast but maybe 1 out of 10 times it will do it. It happens infrequently enough that i really have no idea what triggers it and I actually came home early from fishing this morning because it was getting so bad. I just need to know what is wrong and what i can do about it if anything.

Clean and oil those spool bearings to see if it helps.

For cleaning there are many method, search is your friend. I prefer soak in nail polish remover on top off aquarium pump, then finish off in alcohol.
I believe you have spool shaft bearing, you will need tool to remove shaft pin.

If you are not sure, send to professional to clean check if any local tackle stores can service your reel.

Yeah. Just like anything else mechanical, you gotta maintain and lube your reels.

I dont think it is an issue with bearings, as i clean my reel every month. Its more like the gears are still partially engaged when i make a cast.

If you are sure it is not bearing, it might be spool vibration, pinion yoke, some rubbing etc. if you are sure it is gears then, you old gears is toad. Pinion yoke should lift pinion gear out of main gear completely when pressing thumb bar. Time for professional I believe.

BTW why do you need to clean your reel every month?

The noise you’re hearing is the spool pin slipping on the end of the pinion gear. I can’t tell you why without seeing it. I d start with a Deep Cleaning to see if the clutch frees up. Look at the slide washers on the sides of the thumb bar. They wear and bind the thum bar sometimes. The drive gears themselves have nothing to do with it.

In dummy terms where exactly should i clean, those words arent in my vocabulary ?

Deep cleaning is a complete frame off tear down. The slide washers are thin plastic spacers on the frame each side of the thumb bar. The clutch lifts the yoke and pinion to disengage the spool.

This is by no means best practice, but I have a 13 year old Revo S that does that and I have cleaned it and could not resolve the issue, so I have resorted to the old standby trick of dunking it in the water for 4 or 5 seconds about every 1.5 hrs, lol.  works like a champ

What that’s doing is wetting and temporarily lubricating what should be cleaned and properly oiled. Purposely dunking a reel is a horrible idea.

Ok confession time- How many have dunked their reel at some point in their life to quiet some sound or gritty feeling?

Hence the very first phrase, "This is by no means best practice."
