Super User Cgolf Posted May 21, 2020 Super User Posted May 21, 2020 Starting to think about packing for my week long fishing trip this summer and wondering if I should take a small box of sassy shads with to try? Anyone still use them and do they work? Mostly fish vertical cover like docks and reeds. Also who am I kidding, I started my packing list for this year the day after my trip last year and have thought about it the majority of the days since then;) 1 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted May 21, 2020 Super User Posted May 21, 2020 I would take some. I havnt used them for a while, but caught fish on them in the past. I rigged them on a 1/8 or 1/4 oz ball head jig, and used a slow steady reeling, or jigged also. You could also throw in a few jig spinners. They make a good downsize spinnerbait too 2 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted May 21, 2020 Super User Posted May 21, 2020 What species are you going after? The 2" or 3" sassy shad will catch almost everything. Quote

All bass. I have rage swimmers, smash tech smash shads, etc. But I have these lying around thought I should use them instead of throwing out plastics I have never used. Also thought being smaller they may work well too with the tiny baitfish that are available that time of year. Crappie slider plastics have caught nice bass in years past. Quote

Super User Teal Posted May 21, 2020 Super User Posted May 21, 2020 Nope, they dont work at all. Not one bit. Worst lure ever made. Hey, I actually have some extra room in my shop, feel free to mail them all to me and I'll take that horrible abomination of a lure off your hands and store it in a place that it won't see the light of day?? 1 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted May 21, 2020 Super User Posted May 21, 2020 They were kind of one of the early swimbait type lures. The versatility of them makes it worthwhile to have some. My wife bought a lure at Wal Mart the other night made by Creme. It's called a spoiler shad, and is a spinnerbait. Looks a lot like the Sassy Shad 1 Quote
garroyo130 Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 I have a couple of discontinued 6" models that came with my gamefish grab bag. Can't wait to try them ... although I'm still trying to figure out how to best rig them. 1 Quote
Smells like fish Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 Only use them if you want to catch a big sassy bass! They were one of the lures of my childhood and as said above the 2.5" caught everything in the water. I would buy a 1 or 2 pack at Walmart that came pre rigged on a bright silver jighead back in the early '90's. Those and pink zoom trick worms and I thought I was a mini Bill Dance. I'm glad you brought this back up I need to rekindle my love affair with little swim baits. 1 Quote
Super User RoLo Posted May 21, 2020 Super User Posted May 21, 2020 I can't remember the last time I fished a Sassy Shad, but I’m sure they're just as good today as they ever were. The Sassy Shad was sort of a brainchild for the soft swimbait. When Mister Twister was first introduced (I’m guessing early 70s), I bought all my lures direct from the factory. I bought so many Meenies and 4” grubs they probably thought I was a tackle shop. More than once, Mister Twister sent me a free box of lures for trial (The good ole days). Quote who am I kidding, I started my packing list for this year the day after my trip last year Isn’t that the truth? The best time to plan for the next trip, is hot on the heels of your last trip, when your critical mind is still banging on all cylinders ☺️ Roger 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 22, 2020 Super User Posted May 22, 2020 I bought a pack of 100? a couple of years ago. When the bite shuts off I will cast out a 2" sassy shad on a 1/8 oz jig head. I'll use a 1/16 oz if jig head if I'm fishing over submerged vegetation. I just reel it back with a slow steady retrieve. 2 Quote
