I have a lews baitcaster and if I try and push the handle backwards it moves, not a lot but a noticeable amount. What could be causing this or is it normal?

Oil in the AR bearing ... unless its a BB1 which has the multi-stop AR ... in that case its normal and supposed to help you feel the crankbait bite better

It could be the anti reverse bearing or it could be normal if it’s not moving a lot. You can contact Lews and tell them what it’s doing. Might have to send it in for service. They have great customer service but I think they are still closed due to covid 19.

What is a “noticeable amount”? On an inexpensive reel, my guess is that there is some normal movement from the loose fit of the AR sleeve around the shaft. This is normal to varying degrees in a lot of reels.

It’s not a lot just a bit.

When you push the handle backward, does it stay there? Or does it return? If it is a very small amount of movement, and it returns, you are most likely seeing/feeling the flexing and the tolerances in the parts of the reel.  Some reels exhibit this worse than others. It's nothing to worry about.

However, if you can actually rotate the handle backward, and it stays at that point, something is amiss.

If that’s an advertised thing, that is just wrong. Very, very wrong. I have some reels that have that fraction of a second weightlessness where I pray I hear the crack of the dog kick in after the hookset.

Doesn’t return.
