pabassin Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Who do you have for boat insurance? who has the best rates? THanks Quote
SydneyBass Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 I've got an 2008 18 foot Triton, i've got Allstate, just paid 240 for the year Quote
iClass Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 BoatUS has good coverage - full replacement and 5,000 for fishing gear/tackle. Progressive is inexpensive and offers a good policy and is hassle free in handling claims. STAY AWAY FROM GEICO! Actually Geico doesn't have Insurance for boats, they subcontract it and it is very expensive. Hope this helps. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted February 26, 2009 Super User Posted February 26, 2009 Which ever you buy you need to have a complete understanding on what will happen if and when you have a claim. Understand your deductible, any co-insurance or any other hidden quirks that may come into play. Make friends with your agent. It will go a long way in helping resolve any disputes. And yes, their will be disputes over the coverage limits. Just remember this word...Depreciation>>>You need to understand how it may affect your coverage at claim time. Quote

HPBB Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 allstate, great rates and never had a problem with a claim. Quote
nick76 Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 There are several forums about boating where you can get multiple answers. I have had both allstate and farm bureau. Both have taken care of me very well. There are a couple of insurance companies out there that have many complaints about how they handled claims. I am not going to name them, but you might be surprised. Also remember that there are 3 sides to every story. Yours, theirs, and then what really happens. So just because there is one little tiff don't always put too much weight into it unless it appears someone is being honest. Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 28, 2009 Super User Posted February 28, 2009 USAA. Be careful when purchasing hull coverage. Some carriers give you replacement cost while others are actual cash value. So decide which way you want to to. As for third-party liability, go for $1,000,000 as it is not that much more in cost than $100,000 and everyone needs high limits while on the water. You know what your loss will be if you lose the boat, motor and trailer. You have no idea about third-party liability legal actions and their outcomes in court so get the high limits. Remember, don't risk a lot for a little. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted February 28, 2009 Super User Posted February 28, 2009 Another piece of advice, go with a company that has claim handlers that actually know how to handle boat claims. Auto/Home companies don't necessarily have the expertise. I worked for one of the larger insurance companies for over 43 years. Sam's advice is right on, lawyers are expensive. Quote
