Large, unfamiliar lakes are the most exciting, they offer the greatest challenge and reward.

I agree. A couple years ago me and my better half rented a cabin and a boat for a couple days on a large lake in Central Florida. This was a place that had guides and one of those guides told us we where not going to catch much by ourselves. He was wrong and I ended up catching lots of nice fish. It felt very rewarding that I fished a new lake, figured out where to fish, and caught fish.

If we had time & space to kill, I'd tell you about the many times my wife & I outfished the local guides ?

Men and our gear, are very fickle things and my wife has tried several times and it does not always work out. It is the thought that counts and last year,  she got me one of those bow fishing hunts in the marsh at night...it was an EPIC experience.

At 500 dollars, you can get into some high end gear. I would have him show you his favorite set up and than buy him another one or you may be only to get one of them.

Good luck

Naturally everyone is going to have their own opinion, but I think the guided trip is a great idea. Unless he is a pro, he will likely add a few new tricks to his repertoire and have an opportunity to catch a new personal best. While I would love a cabin and slip on a different lake, fishing sometimes can be about 'catching.' Getting skunked 2 days in a row can get pretty frustrating as a gift.

My two cents is get a nice lil cabin close to lake...spend a few days..talk to locals...relax...go to couple fishin stores.  One day is over and done....several days is more of an adventure.

All the best to you both....sounds like he has a keeper

Another vote for an experience over material items. Lots of good suggestions here.

I don't have any advice for you that hasn't already been given.  I'll just say that your boyfriend is a lucky man to have a lady like you!  My advice to him is "Boy, you better marry that girl"!

This an excellent suggestion.

I believe that is run by MLF pro Michael Neals family.

My old tourney partner swore by a guide named Chris Hight.

A guided bass trip on a new lake would be awesome. A guided bass trip on a familiar lake might give him some insight to fishing his home lake that he will use in the future. A new species trip would be sweet too --  big TN river flathead catfish, blue catfish, or stripers are examples. I am personally picky about my gear, so a gift card would be sweet; it would NOT feel less special than a regular gift. A $500 gift card to tackle warehouse would make me feel like a kid in a candy shop! Of the options I listed, I would pick either a big flathead catfish trip (I envy your state's flathead catfish population), or the tackle warehouse gift card, but I would still be overly excited about the other two. That is ME, though. It might take some detective work to see what would be good. I am thinking i might have to leave my computer open to this thread in a very visible location.... ?

I have had some great experiences watching pros and learning from them in several disciplines including bass fishermen. He may even have a local guide in mind that he would love to fish with. He might enjoy having you along too. Definitely a 'keeper'!

$500 can get him a day on the water with a guide I am sure.  Which is what I would want my wife to get if she was looking to blow me away with a surprise.  I am very particular with my gear so that would be a little iffy unless she got my wishlist stuff.  I would vote for a day on a good bass lake with a guide for a day with a better chance of catching that giant fish of my dreams!!!

Spending a day with a good guide would be a great investment that he won't forget.

He has a LOT of lures so I think he is good there. Are there any really hot rods or reels out? What about a guided bass trip to a really hot bed bass lake?

A LOT of lures, is most likely not even remotely close to being enough lures. The more the better.  The more expensive the rod and reel the better.  New line is always good.  New electronics.  The list is endless.   Guided trip would be awesome.

Another vote for this

However, another idea that nobody has brought up is a Custom hand made rod.  Maybe you can find away to see what technique specific rod he would want if he had one choice..and maybe just get @Delaware Valley Tackle to make one.

The only.down side to this is making a custom rod, I personally would want an input on the specifics... but I think he would be thrilled no matter what.

In 8 years on this forum, I think you a re e the first I can remember to come in here on the husband's behalf to do something nice for them.   ??

Most of the other posters have given you some good advice. All I will say is that I drove through your neck of the woods last July when I moved from Maryland to Texas. Absolutely beautiful. Probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to in the US. I would have loved to have driven there in the fall.
