I need help with these Owner hooks, couple of questions

As shocking as it may be I am new to fishing soft plastic worms. I bought some 5" Senkos and some 6.5" Trick worms. I also bought some 10" Zoom Ol' Monsters. I need some help deciding on the hooks to match up with them. I am wanting to try some of these Owner Twist Lock hooks but I have questions about the style and size to go with.

 

For the Senkos/trick worms I was leaning towards the 3/0 size, would you agree or disagree with that size? (I probably should mention whichever hook size/style I go with I would also like to use for Zoom Super Flukes.)

 

For the Ol' Monsters I was leaning towards the 5/0 size, would you recommend that or some other size?

 

But I THOUGHT the size question was the only decision I had to make. Went to Bass Pro today and saw there are two different style of these hooks to consider as the photo here shows. The 5167 style of hook specifically says they are designed for Senko stick baits, for whatever the reason should I use this type for those types of baits? Which of these two should I use for the Ol' Monsters and why?

 

If it helps with your answer to these two question I will most likely be T-rigging them on my 7'2" MH Expride with 16# Sniper FC.

The owner twist lock light 3/0 is what I use for all of my 5" senkos when fishing weightless. For the ol monsters I would use a 5/0 ewg. Sorry I really do not use flukes very often, can't help you there.

I use owner ewg most of the time I have never used the twist lock versions but I’m sure they will work well. Senkos and super flukes I use 4/0 I mainly use 3/0 and 4/0 for most soft plastics, I also use 2/0 for smaller grub style baits just get a pack of each size and match your hook to the plastic.

If you posted a photo of each style hook then I can't see it, but I think the difference with the 5167 is that it's a lighter wire hook. Not positive on that though.

 

For me I prefer a 4/0 for my 5" senkos & flukes. The 5/0 should be good on a 10" worm.

Agreed. Only for Senkos i go EWG and offset shank for Trick Worms.

Just curious, why a twist lock for a senko, trick work, or ol monster? An EWG will work for all of them.

Just wanted to try them and i figured the screw lock would lengthen the life of the bait. I was fairly confident on the hook size to use but am still clueless as to which style of them to use for both.

I think the difference is how wide the Gap is on those hooks, all the baits you mentioned are fairly skinny so I think the "skinnier" hooks would work best for you.

The 5132 appears to have a wider gap and is a heavier gauge like you'd find on a flipping hook.

The Twistlock Light is a really good hook but it's just as it says, light. I have rolled a couple of hook points fishing them on MH rods and braid. They're great Senko hooks on straight fluoro.

Too big a hook lose some action in the bait. 3/0 twistlock (xxx shank due to the MH rod and 16lb line) for the senko/stickbaits because the nose will tear easy. For worms, I use offset hooks (https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Owner_Offset_Shank_Wide_Gap_Worm_Hooks/descpage-OOSWGW.html), 2/0-3/0 offset for the trick worm and 4/0-5/0 offset for larger worms. I usually stay towards the smallest hook I can get away with. In my experience, a bass will almost always eat a worm head first so no need for a giant hook. If you want to use an EWG and have a interchangeable hook for worms/flukes, 4/0 EWG for 7-10" worms and super flukes.

Barring an out-of-the-water head shake, senkos last forever for me on the twistlocks. I'd guess five fish or so, and if you are really feeling the need to stretch it out you won't have to take more than 1/3 inch off the top to get another three or four.

Open water with flukes go with the lightest weight, in cover go with the heavier weighted hook. Pair both with appropriate rod power.

 

We were messing around one day throwing 2/0 Owner hooks on Magnum flukes (had a poor tackle selection on the boat that day) and we're still knocking down 6"-18" Largemouth. They will headshot a fluke so I don't think it matters much as long as the hook gap has enough clearance to grab some flesh.
