Dick's has a buy 6 get two Zoom plastics free going on at their Richmond store by Lowe's, across from Costco.

Someone mentioned previously that Dick's was scaling down its fishing department.

I wonder if this is the start of that process?

Dicks has had these type of sales I don’t think this has anything to do with them scaling back on their fishing department.

However they might very well be scaling back their fishing department.

I get their monthly catalog and I see a ton of fishing gear so I have not seen any evidence of that happening, not saying it’s not happening it would not surprise me if they are.

I think it has to do with the particular market. Before they locked their doors and went to curbside delivery only because of the pandemic, I stopped in my local Dick's for a MH/M spinning rod that was on sale. The fishing department there had actually increased in size a bit. The hunting department was gone, replaced by the canoe/kayak department and where the canoe/kayak department had been was given over to sports-wear.

Closest other 'major' sporting goods stores to the local Dick's are Scheels (11 miles) and Cabelas (21 miles). If your Dick's has other chain stores closer, then they might reduce the fishing department.

I think when they say "Scaling back", they are talking about how many stores actually have a fishing department.  The one by me has grown a little but it's junk. It's more of the lower quality baits at higher prices than you find online.  Even things like senkos are $8.99 (regular price) a pack compared to $7.49 at Tackle Warehouse.

I think the thing that bothers me about DSG is that they have the potential to have a great fishing department but they just won't take the steps or make the investment to do it.

We have two DSG stores here. The last time I was in the one closest to me the fishing dept. had very little in it. The prices were so high I wouldn't buy anything. I guess they want everybody to buy from them online. I prefer going to the store to make my purchases when I can.

I believe it's part of a corporate rebranding strategy, Dick's handling the golf, stick and ball, apparel, etc... while their Field and Stream outlets handle the hunting and fishing side of the game. They actually closed an anchoring store near me in a thriving mall and have a huge Dick's/Field and Stream combo anchoring a new location as primary. The on hand inventory is way better as it's a full size store and you don't have to wade through a clothing store to find the good stuff but prices at Field and Stream are still too high.

The prices are hiked up but I think it’s because you can just walk in an grab what you want when your in a hurry this is of course pre pandemic now it’s more curbside pick up stuff which would probably make online a better deal.

I’ve noticed they have been promoting a ton of googan baits on their catalogue as far as their spinnerbaits, jigs, frogs, plastics.

Which may be why my local Dick's is expanding the fishing section...closest F&S store to me is almost 8 hours away in Champaign, IL.

Dick's closed their 84,0000 square foot anchor store in the Stony Point Fashion Park shopping center leaving only Dillards and Sachs 5th Avenue as anchors. So far no one has moved into the vacated space.

Dick's still has stores at Short Point Town Center and adjacent to Lowe's off Kroger Drive in Chesterfield County.

Since I don't play ball anymore all I do is shop for fishing bargains in their stores.

Will check out the Short Pump store when I take my wife to Talbot's and Chico's in the Short Point mall in the future.

I do not believe we have any Field and Stream stores in the greater Richmond area.

I know there are ones in Charlottesville and Norfolk but no others in Virginia.

Location, location, location. The F&S in Chesapeake is located to take advantage of traffic from folks on their way to the Outer Banks as it's just a couple of miles from the exit to the main route to OBX.

An hour to one, hour and-a-half to the other...that's a lot better than my time.

I'd trade my Field and Stream for a Fleet Farm any day!

I got two of those within 40 minutes of me.

I haven't been in either one in Lexington for a couple months before this pandemic. Which location had very little?

The Dicks’s in Bristol TN carries no tackle or rods. You can find a limited selection of clothing that’s it. They carry fishing kayaks though ?‍♂️. I guess a mile to BPS may be a reason they don’t stock anything though they dropped their sponsorship of the classic so I’m guessing they are not seeing a return even as a quasi endemic sponsor.

*At my local Dick's about two months ago they dismantled about 35% of their fishing rows / aisles to make room for cooking and camping equipment - most were Zoom and Z-man soft plastics . Dick's previously had a  significant Zoom collection of soft plastics with rare colors I liked . *Since Dick's got rid of black rifles and adopted the political stance they took - I believe they have lost quite a few customers (the COVID-19 certainly hasn't helped). I still buy things at Dick's when it makes sense (sales) or one or two lures I specifically need quick they have in stock .

I like dicks for things I can pick up in a pinch but most of the time they don’t have what I need

my local stores are down to about 4 fishing aisles.  when they first opened 10 years ago they had almost double.  seems they have cut down the number of brands and species.  The musky aisle is gone, panfish and catfish is minimal, the st croix displays are gone.  They seem to be going all in with Googan and Z-man.

The one in Hamburg is the one I was in. It looked like I had more fishing stuff than they did. DSG may run some decent online sales but I never think about checking their website since the store prices were so high.

I put in an order from Dick's a little over a week ago because of the sales they are having.  Got about $100 worth of tackle for $58.  The order shipped from multiple locations so I received them at different times but one showed up the next day and most of the other tackled showed up two days later.  The rest showed up about a week later.  I was pretty happy with the order.

The DSG near me has moved all of their fishing gear out of the store entirely. I have no idea if there are any other DSG stores in the surrounding area, but I won't likely be needing to find out in the foreseeable as we have an excellent local tackle store, a Turner's Outdoorsman, Big 5, and three Walmarts in the local area to choose from that were always better than the meager offerings that Dicks had before they made room for more clothes and shoes.
