Super User RoLo Posted May 21, 2020 Super User Posted May 21, 2020 Mindless littering is at the head of my pet peeves. I'm not pinning this on anglers per se, but the human race. Roger 7 Quote

People park on the lake for days at a time and leave all kinds of crap right ON the ice. Trash, human feces, fish guts, empty propane tanks, pieces of discarded wood, beer cans, etc. Where do you think all that stuff ends up when the ice melts in the spring? Yep, in the lake. I'm not saying that every ice angler is like this - but by far and wide they are the worst crowd simply because they are out there for longer periods of time. The sad thing is that most of them are really not out there to catch fish. Fishing is secondary after drinking, socializing, playing cards, watching satellite TV, etc. Yep, and I'm the guy out there on the ice chasing bluegills and crappies just as hard as bass in the spring and summer, not out there to do anything besides that. I am also the guy that ends up with a flipover shack full of people's junk. The worst thing about the ice litter is, sometimes the surface of the ice will thaw and refreeze, locking in much of the trash. 3 Quote
MGF Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 Non-boaters who park in the way of the boat ramp are aggravating but they may just be ignorant. When a boater blocks the ramp it's way beyond the pale. We have a few people around here who park their rig directly in front of and in line with the ramp. Then everybody else needs to snake in at an angle to reach the ramp. This is at ramps where there is plenty of parking. I saw a guy do it last night and his was the only rig there. He had 40 acres he could have parked in. I need to put a note pad in the truck so I can leave notes for folks like that. Quote

Its not horrible all the time here, but the worst time is if you are fishing in the mid or late afternoon during peak times. The lock down has made it hard here beciase the local lake parks are closed so alot of them are just going to the ramps and you have alot of people bank fishin, and hanging out, on top of an increase of people getting their boats wet.... lately Its hard for me cuz I'm home schooling kids so. Early isnt always an option. I go at 530 when gf gets home from the hospital and the ramp is pretty busy, not so much with boats just alot of people. Quote

So many people fishing now, and more trash than ever. A lot of people around here started going when they shut the bars down. One good thing about it is, I've been finding a lot more lures. Quote

I've been an on and off alcoholic for 5 years... I've gotten way more fishing in since I've been sober and in the 18 month span (a couple years ago) that I was sober. (Yeah i fell off the wagon for a year) no alcohol has made big difference on the amount of fishing I've done and where my fishing was as a priority. 3 Quote

Even with that, the boat guys get peeved with the Yak guys from time to time. As it does take us a little longer to get everything to the water and sometimes, we have to use the ramp, to actually get the yak in the water. 1 hour ago, Teal said: Way off topic- but I know that last comment to be true. I have had to remove line from my trolling motor and main motor a couple times this year. 2 Quote

Jonas Staggs Posted May 25, 2020 Posted May 25, 2020 its sad to say, but when I am scouting new spots, fishing trash is always a giveaway that theres fish there. Also for other ponds that get regularly fished in my area, its crazy how much fishing trash people leave behind. I dont clean up others trash, but I do pack out my own, and I am always finding lures, hooks, plastics, and bobbers left behind that I keep to re-use. My pet peeve is people that come and crowd your spot, like dude you have the whole lake to fish and you need to fish 3 feet away from me? This is after you have politely asked them to fish somewhere else in regards to "social distancing" and the whole virus thing. Quote
papajoe222 Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 I don’t see much in the way of littering as I rarely fish from shore. What I do see a lot of is disregard for another angler’s space and time. Way too oftenI see an angler tie up the line at the launch because he wasn’t ready when his turn came. Half an hour in line and he waits until the. To load up his gear and supplies. This is usually the same guy that tries half a dozen time to back down the ramp only to figure out the boat was still tied down to the trailer. the other is the one that not only attempts to fish the spot you’ve been catching fish on, bot will motor over the spot and innocently ask what you’re using. My standard reply is: Itt really doesn’t matter because you just spooked every fish within casting distance. 3 Quote

Rather than embarrass my friend, I waited for an opportune moment, then picked it up and tossed it into my trunk. On our following after-work trip, I hoisted my trunk lid, and Jim spotted the sandwich wrapper. He asked me: "Is that mine?". I replied: "Yes" Not another word was spoken (A word to the wise is sufficient). Roger 5 1 Quote

Keep up the good fight...rewards are awesome This was pretty funny actually.....Person launches boat in middle of ramp...goes fishing....come's back a bit later and everything was towed. Lesson maybe learned....hope so. Happened at ramp just down street from me last year... 3 Quote

Manifestgtr Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 This thread is soooo timely... The other day, I saw a group of guys fishing with bobbers, shiners and a blasting radio at the boat launch (no biggie, whatever...I’m not THAT much of a codger). They caught something just as I was starting to get a little further away...too far away to see what it actually was. Tons of whooping and hollering followed by this guy flipping the fish up into the air and *SMACK* back into the water. I’ve always hated guys who do that with a burning, unhealthy passion. It’s so low rent and disrespectful. Naturally, when I got back, there were cigarette butts and snell hook packages everywhere. 3 Quote

I don't fish to be a sadist; I love animals and believe that all living things have a right to be treated with dignity. Anyone that is cruel simply for the sake of being cruel gives up any right to be treated with dignity and deserves…some things that I'm not going to go into detail on because I like it here and want to stick around. 5 hours ago, Manifestgtr said: Naturally, when I got back, there were cigarette butts and snell hook packages everywhere. MGF Posted May 28, 2020 Posted May 28, 2020 Earlier in the thread I said that I haven't seen many cig butts for a long time. Well, Monday I took a walk around "the pond" and they were everywhere. Sunday when we were headed home from the riever we were met by a bunch of drunk kayakers hogging the ramp. 1 Quote

I love strapping a backpack on with tackle, food, water etc and grabbing my baitcaster and blazing a path without having to worry about other people. Then I get a couple miles in to somewhere on the lake by foot only to have stumbled across beer bottles and condom wrappers(yes...it’s weird for the middle of nowhere) and food condiments. You cannot escape people and their bad habits for nothing. Quote
