Just saw what Hank Cherry used to win the Classic. Aways interesting to see what these guys use.  Boy, he sure likes 20lb flouro.  Notice, no braid.  

Jerkbait: Megabass 110 w/#5 EWG Fusion trebles fished on a 6'10" medium Abu rod, an Abu STX reel, 15lb 100% flouro

Jig: 3/8oz Picasso Dock Rocket fished on a 7'4"ABU MH rod, ABU STX reel, 20lb 100% flouro

Crankbait:  Bloody Thumb no rattles, 7'4" medium ABU rod, ABU STX reel, 12lb %100 flouro

Bladed Jig: 1/2oz Jack Hammer w/3" grubs, 7'4" medium ABU rod, 20lb %100 flouro

It all worked for him to win.

If he threw a topwater that would have broken that tie.

Also notice no "crappy white rods" either ??

 

Besides the jig I throw the rest on flouro too.

On the site it states he was using a ML Abu rod for the jerkbait.  Seems weird to me to be throwing 15 lb line on a ML rod.  I usually use 10.

If money were no object or I were getting it for free from a sponsor, maybe I would fish more FC.  Braid lasts nearly forever it seems, and for me is easier to cast (although I know this opinion differs).

Good quality FC will last years as well

Not to discount the credit fluro played in his win but talking pros vs. Joes makes me think of that quote (b. Phillips on d. Shula) "he can take his'n and beat your'n and he can take your'n and beat his'n). I think if I was up against this guy or any pro with me throwing  fluro all day he still could whip my tail with 100 lb. Braid.

He won because he found fish and established a pattern. It’s impossible to tell whether he would have won or not having changed any or all of his tackle. We’ll never know.

He was probably using the line size more so to control lure depth than anything. Most pros do a lot of changing of line diameters to help them really fine tune where their lures run. Jacob Wheeler did a good video on this a while ago where he tested with a crank bait and showed the difference in depth he was seeing on the crank bait with different line diameters.

However Megabass jerks bring on massive salivation, serious I'm like a dog eye balling a meaty bone.

I think pro baseball players will destroy the ball on the local players team with any bat you put in their hands and the pitchers will pitch no hitters with any baseball you put in their hands. Fishing is about the same. I have never personally witnessed anyone do as good as the pros on bass. If I had any chance of fishing like the pros, I’d quit my job tomorrow.

I bought a Vision 110 to try this spring.

 

It is still sitting in the box because I'm afraid to throw it around pike, who are going crazy here right now.  On Wednesday, I lost a Smithwick Rogue to one of them, thus reinforcing my fears.

None of those baits are baits I'd fish with braid either, maybe I can win the Bassmaster Classic?

 

Everything seems pretty standard as far as line size. I'd go with copolymer or mono for the for all of them except the jig, but I could get by with fluoro, just not my personal preference.

but ill add to that that he likely only mentions what hes sponsored by. Its very possible other takle/lures were used but due to contractual agreements, they are not mentioned.

See, I dont think that's the case with fishing...99% of people can't afford to fish professionally.

Odd... Last year I bought a couple of the Gen 4 Abu reels and I like all of them except the STX, which is what this guy used.  I don't think I got a lemon, it sort of failed for me all around.  It didn't cast well, the brakes worked when they wanted to, the drag was marginal and not smooth, and the reel it's self was kind of geary and rough.  I did try two of these before I totally gave up and bought a Curado DC. 

 

The other Abu reels I have (ALF, Winch, and Revo Toro Beast) are smooth and have been great reels.

If I was good enough to do it. I definitely would be doing it right now.
