Alec Berwald Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 My Shimano Scorpion XT 1500, pretty much identical to the old green machine Curado 200 E series is making a terrible noise when casting. Almost sounds like a turtle getting ready to mate. Any thoughts? I think it might by a dry bearing. I tried oiling and cleaning the brake drum, and it's squeaky clean and oiled. Still having the same problem. Quote
DomQ Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Could be a bad bearing, but I cant remember for the life of me what turtles banging sound like again, care you try and type it out so I can get a better understanding? Haha all jokes aside try checking your bearings, also do you have your drag cranked down all the way and how tight is your spool tension knob. You could also check the little red/green brake pins, make sure they are all still in place. If your not comfortable taking your reel apart maybe have it sent out. There are loads of guys here who do service reels. Update... dont google turtles banging ? 1 Quote

Heartland Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Those E model Shimano's have a frame mounted bearing that is often overlooked and neglected. Has been the source for a few rough reels in my experience. 1 Quote

I've actually got a curado E opened up right now, all your springs in place? Quote

I contacted a reel repairman in Illinois, probably going to send it in soon and have him clean it out and look at it. I'm gonna have it just straight flush it out and see if it fixes the problem. 1 hour ago, Heartland said: Those E model Shimano's have a frame mounted bearing that is often overlooked and neglected. Super User FishTank Posted May 13, 2020 Super User Posted May 13, 2020 A buddy a mine has an E making a noise like that. I think its the ARB bearing (part #60) but I could be wrong. For the money, the bearings for this reel should be the same as the E and would be cheap on Shimano's website. The spool bearings is where I would start though. Sometimes, even when they have been cleaned and re-lubed, they can still be bad. Another thing, I have seen to make an odd noise like that and its extremely rare, is either the pinion is worn on the inside or the spool shaft is dinged up. You will hear it on the cast but not feel it on the retrieve. As stated above from Tom, DVT is the man and may have better insight. Quote

If it is only making noise on the cast, there is a better than not chance this is not the problem. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 13, 2020 Posted May 13, 2020 Neither the AR or pinion support bearing have any affect on casting. Casting noise should be limited to brakes, bearings, spool rim or spool shaft. Eliminate one at a time until you find the culprit. 2 Quote

marmooskapaul Posted May 13, 2020 Posted May 13, 2020 Take all but one of the brake collars off and see if the noise stops. If so clean inside rim of color and little post’s that the brake collars slide on. Been through this with my Curados. Quote
Alec Berwald Posted May 15, 2020 Author Posted May 15, 2020 (edited) To everyone who commented on this thread, thank you. I figured out the culprit. I took the spool bearing out and cleaned the recess that it sat in. It was very, very dirty. I cleaned and dried the bearing of any excessive oil, then added a tiny amount of my Penn Grease to the bearing. It casts like a dream now and is very quiet. I appreciate all the help, and as always, tight lines Edited May 15, 2020 by Alec Berwald 1 Quote
