swimmingjig Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 I can't believe my eyes when the app noticed me the bidding was over. 500 bucks for a 10+ years old reel? Seriously? Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted May 12, 2020 Super User Posted May 12, 2020 Shimano stopped putting the 4x8 DC in their reels after that. Now we get the boring preset stuff. The Calais DC on the longest cast setting is still probably one of the furthest casting freshwater reels ever made. Quote
swimmingjig Posted May 12, 2020 Author Posted May 12, 2020 I own a Calais DC too. Of cause it has superb casting ability and it look super cool also the dc sound , but also the weight itself is a obvious downside . And for that money if something of a 10+ years old reel go wrong then is another story. I don't have any same level reel after I have kids. So I wish some guys can tell us how the modern DC reel compare to this. BTW I alway think it look very similar to the robocop 1987 since I open the box? 1 1 Quote
CrankFate Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 There is a difference between fishing and collecting. These are nice reels. Other hot collectibles, not so much. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted May 13, 2020 Super User Posted May 13, 2020 For some, the Calais is a special reel (DC and regular). I have mentioned this before but I had a Calais 201A and sold it for the same price I paid for it after owning it for two years. Some reels just hold their value. I still find it strange. Quote

How would you compare the Calais to the newer model Shimanos? Quote
Super User FishTank Posted May 13, 2020 Super User Posted May 13, 2020 If you're talking about my old Calais, it was heavy like a tank. But if you fished a round reel, it has the same heavy weight feeling. It was smooth like no other in its day and way ahead of its time. Compared to todays reels, once Shimano went to the micro gears, it kind of changed things at all levels for Shimano as far as smoothness goes. If I had to compare it to a modern day reel, the closest to the same feeling is the Shimano Calcutta Conquest. The new Antares (Calais) is in a league all it's own, especially the 70. 1 Quote

The new Antares, I've never fished a smoother reel. I find myself listening closely, to see if I hear noise. Quote

Yes that’s what I’m talking about , the new Antares DC is sitting there and is just cost few more McDonald’s meal for a brand new one . I can’t understand why someone is betting that money for the Calais. 1 Quote

I can’t understand why someone is betting that money for the Calais. I shop E-Bay occasionally and have seen the same thing happen with lures. I tend to bid on stuff from Simmons Sporting Goods and I have seen three Lucky Craft lures go for more than you can buy them for on Tackle Warehouse. I think with people being off work, they have nothing better to do and it's increasing the chances of a bidding war. If you are looking for a Calais/Antares DC, try AsianPortal Fishing on eBay. Not sure when you will get it with EMS at this time. Quote
HenryPF Posted May 13, 2020 Posted May 13, 2020 My Antares DC from 2006? 07? Is still my main reel - but no way would I say that thing is still worth $550. Haven't had the chance to use the Curado DC yet to compare Quote
swimmingjig Posted May 13, 2020 Author Posted May 13, 2020 What rod do u pair with that? I tried put mine to my legend tournament and xtreme I feel very uncomfortable , it feel way better to sit on the Avid . But I have a bitter feeling to put a ex-flagship on a entry level rod. 20 minutes ago, HenryPF said: My Antares DC from 2006? 07? I remember when I first saw this reel. I immediately imagined a glowing red eye oscillating back and forth like a cylon. To the topic, people will pay what they’re willing to pay. Quote

Ty I do agree with you on the preset stuff however Shimano kept the 4X8 on the 16 Antares DC and yes it is still a distance caster. Being a DC guy since they came out the 4X8 in my opinion is the DC reel benchmark...... 1 Quote
