AmmoGuy Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 This coastal is so nice, I might just sell my CT and grab another. Unless of course there is something the CT can do that the costal can’t? ? Quote

Super User Tywithay Posted May 16, 2020 Super User Posted May 16, 2020 The spool won't freespool as long because it's so light. If you had a 20g spool with ceramic bearings you can spin it for 5 minutes. The difference is on the water performance. I had a chance to use the Coastal a little more tonight and I came away more and more impressed with each cast. I put it on a 7'4" MHR Tatula Elite rod. I was throwing a 1/2oz crankbait as far as I've ever seen with any reel. Tried with the wind, into the wind, cross wind...never touched the mag brakes. Had to hide my wallet so I don't buy another. I personally really like the knobs. The old Tatula knobs were too flat like a Lews knob for my tastes. I prefer these. Still not a good as the knobs on the Curado. 3 Quote

In that it is a Magforce Z spool vs the SV spool and that it is a distance tuned Magforce Z spool at that. Both this reel and the Coastal occupy different ends of an overlapping spectrum. Overlapping in that the HRF is also a saltwater variant of the Tatula 100 but intended for red snapper fishing with braid but it'll launch your frog just fine too. DAiwa is hard to keep up with it seems. That’s a sweet reel, but I’m kind of looking forward to using the controlled SV. Quote
AmmoGuy Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 I’ve got to do a little studying on the differences in Daiwas spool/inductor designs. It seems that the size of the inductor, the strength of the inductor return spring, as well as the magnets in the side plate vary depending on model? So a magforce Z “tuned for distance” could be something as simple as a slightly smaller inductor? “SV” just refers to the spool itself, (7075) no? The SV spool still uses the centrifugal inductor “magforce” it seems. Quote

If you put an RCS1016 in a Steez SV, that reel now has MagZ. I think it has more to do with the inductors than anything else as the magnets appear to be the same in most reels I've seen. Quote

They are larger than photos make them look, but I much prefer the big Abu Revo knobs. Maybe try some Reel Grips. I put em on all my reels. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Reel_Grips_Pro_Series/descpage-RGPS.html Quote
LonnieP Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 I put my new Coastal on my OG Tatula 7’ m/r and tied on a 1/2 oz lipless crankbait. Went out to the backyard and I’m very impressed with the casting distance I’m getting one handed with very little effort. Quote
AmmoGuy Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 Got to throw the reel a little this morning. Everything is nice and smooth, silent on the cast, little bit of noise reeling. The breaking system is going to take a little getting used to. Was tossing a frog with a little wind, and couldn’t really find the sweet spot. I could get it tuned (about 6-8 on the dial) for leisurely side arming or roll casting.... but if I tried to really get into it over head, it seemed like the spool wanted to blow up (And kind of did one time). If I set it so that I could get aggressive with it overhead without tons of thumb work, it felt really choked down if I just tossed it sidearm. I backed off on the “zero adjust” a hair, and that may have evened things out some. Just going to have to play with it. ETA: Don’t ask me why, but I went back out with the reel, and after about 20 more casts, everything seemed to settle in almost. Spool isn’t trying to blow up anymore, and I’m getting average/above average distance pretty easily. I didn’t really make any adjustments? I almost wonder if the inductor was stuck, or something broke in? Who knows. I have the spool tension set so that I can just barely feel a “click” when I wiggle it side to side, and the magnetic is set to 8. Throwing a frog that comes in about 1/2 oz. Quote
