collinfiske_RFC Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 Hope everyone is staying healthy. I'm in limbo between boats. I figured now would be a good time to to do some reading, especially with everything being shut down the way it is. Does anyone have any good print recommendations that are bass fishing/fishing in general related? Looking for something to pass the time! Thanks! Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 11, 2020 Super User Posted May 11, 2020 Yes, here are some suggestions: 1. Google any topics you are interested in learning and read what you find from various pros. 2. Amazon Prime to find the Kevin VanDam books or Ike's biography, Fishing on the Edge , or Denny Brauer's book on flipping and pitching. 3. Check out Woo Daves Internet site and read his articles. Woo is a Classic winner and a classic person. 4. There are other very informative books out there and the guys will tell you about,e specially those that are about hunting large bass like Sowbelly which you can find on Amazon. 5. Uncle Homer Circle's books if you can find anything on him. He passed away but he was one of the guys who started studying the bass with Big Mouth and Big Mouth Forever. 6. Go to the pros various Internet sites and read what they pen with tips and information. Good luck and learn as much as you can during downtime. 1 Quote

Super User WRB Posted May 11, 2020 Super User Posted May 11, 2020 I think every bass angler should watch Larews Big Mouth video's. In Pursuit of Giant Bass book by Bill Murphy is a definate read. Site member Josh Alwines books are good High Percentage Fishing and Lunker Lore. Tom 1 Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted May 12, 2020 Super User Posted May 12, 2020 You want something to read? Look at the very top of the page. You will find a tab that says fishing articles. There’s enough there to keep you occupied for a long time. 3 Quote
NJBasstard Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 If you ever come across the book Knowing Bass by Keith A. Jones for a reasonable price then it's worth the read. Other than that book and the ones already mentioned their are some good videos available online. In addition to the Uncle Homer stuff theres a youtube series that's a good watch for anyone who loves bass fishing. I think he's up to 4 parts now. I believe this is part 1. 2 Quote
redux Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 The books that come to mind: Lures for Lunker Bass - Bud Andrews Hannon's Big Bass Magic - Doug Hannon Both KVD books (We need number 3!) Fishing on the Edge - Mike Iaconelli Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted May 12, 2020 Super User Posted May 12, 2020 One of my favorite fishing books to read is not bass related: life and times in catfish country. It's a collection of Doug stange catfish articles from almost 30 years of writing for In Fisherman. There is some good info on there but for the most part I just like his storytelling style and find it a very entertaining read. 1 Quote

The book is out of publication and Dr. Jones told me he did not think he was going to have it reprinted and sold again. This book is a fantastic read so please do as NJ above suggests and try to find a copy at a reasonable price. You can go to Amazon and find it and negotiate with the seller for a paperback copy. Good luck. Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted May 12, 2020 Super User Posted May 12, 2020 There are some old threads here with lots of excellent reading recommendations -- I actually first found the BassResource forums while search for bass fishing book lists: Some books are easy to find used for cheap on Amazon or Ebay sellers. For instance, the In-fisherman Largemouth and Smallmouth guides --which are still in print in their original text after 30+ years -- can be often had used in an earlier printing for $2-3 plus shipping. These are excellent overviews on the fundamentals, and still hold up well. Others like Keith Jones' Knowing Bass you're going to have a hard time finding for a reasonable price, but you might get lucky. Looks like the Murphy book, In Pursuit of Giant Bass is starting to get hard to find for a good price too! By the way, the tnf video posted above is created by none other than our own @Paul Roberts! His series is a must-see. Start with the documentary on the spawn! Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted May 12, 2020 Super User Posted May 12, 2020 Even though this book is dated now, I would suggest getting a copy of Charlie Brewer Slider Fishing. A great book on light tackle bass fishing Quote

Super User Munkin Posted May 12, 2020 Super User Posted May 12, 2020 Rick Clunn did one I think was a series of articles on seasonal patterns. Rich Z Finesse fishing DVD's KVD Spinnerbait videos 1 and 2 Ike's Finesse fishing video. Love or hate him this is a great video where he acts normal, doesn't pimp products, and gives tons of good info. Allen 1 Quote

Super User Paul Roberts Posted May 13, 2020 Super User Posted May 13, 2020 "The Spawn" is first. "Development I: Coming Into The World" (explores the first year of life) is next. On deck are Development II and III (explore adult life), although I may end up combining them. They should all stand alone just fine, as well. 22 hours ago, MIbassyaker said: On 5/12/2020 at 6:08 AM, NJBasstard said: Since the OP asked about print: I still think the IF "Handbook of Strategies", and "Critical Concepts" series are requisite. Another interesting read not already mentioned is Bob Underwood's "Lunker". 1 Quote
Super User king fisher Posted May 13, 2020 Super User Posted May 13, 2020 Though not about bass fishing in particular. Here are to classics about life as a fisherman, that are two of my all time favorites. As usual, book is way better than movie. A River Why -- David Duncan A River Runs through it.--- Norman Maclean. 1 Quote

Jason had nothing to go on, he was a true bass fishing pioneer, and his insight is still applicable to this day. Little wonder he's not mentioned today, Jason's favorite lure was a white wooden plug with a red head In his photo below, that's probably Lake Minnetonka, MN (Get a load of that outboard motor). It's dog eared and worn with many underlined sections. Jason was the editor of Sports Afield magazine. He was the authority on bass fishing back in the fifties. As a kid, I read this book so many times, I wore it out. This was before bass tournaments, plastic worms, trolling motors or bass boats. Jason introduced many of us to bass fishing. You won't find many modern topics in this book. You will read what bass fishing was like when your great grandfather fished. Jason was a competitive guy. It comes across in his book. Bass tournaments changed bass fishing forever. I fished some of the first in Florida. The history of these tournaments is fascinating in itself. Buy a copy of Ray Scott's "Bass Boss". Ray signed my book in 2006 when the Classic was in Kissimmee. There were many things that happened back then that aren't in his book. It all turned out great. Quote
