kayaking_kev Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 I've been using spinning gear a little more this year for cold water finesse bass fishing and for pan-fish. I have very little experience with spinning reels overall, but I've been having a problem during retrieve, with my line missing the spool on the bottom and wrapping around the frame instead. What causes this and what can I do to solve it? I been using a size 2000 reel with 6# Mono. Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted May 10, 2020 Super User Posted May 10, 2020 You may have put too much line on the reel. It needs to be filled to about 1/8" below the lip of the spool. Always close the bail by hand after you make a cast. After closing the bail pull the line tight on the reel and then start your retrieve. 1 Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted May 10, 2020 Super User Posted May 10, 2020 Are you closing the bail with your hand..? if not, do that. 2 Quote

The only spinner I don't do this with is my old Pflueger 640 - that one actually has a metal catch that engages the bail...only way to release it is to operated the handle. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 If you’re working a jerk bait or other technique that throws slack into the line maybe reel faster to keep the loops to a minimum. 1 Quote

Seems flat to me. 1 minute ago, Delaware Valley Tackle said: If you’re working a jerk bait or other technique that throws slack into the line maybe reel faster to keep the loops to a minimum. No jerkbait, but we have had at least 15 mph here in Ohio seems about everyday for awhile now. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 10, 2020 Super User Posted May 10, 2020 Because you reel in while line is slack. It happened to me as well not with all the line mostly stiffer line. I don’t have this problem when using braid or 4lb mono but happen a lot with nanofil. 1 Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted May 10, 2020 Super User Posted May 10, 2020 O.K..1 more ?..are you keeping tension on the line while you retrieve.? If not, try it, it may solve your problem. 1 Quote

I've never had it happen with braid either, but has happened to me with 4 lb mono. 2 minutes ago, Hammer 4 said: O.K..1 more ?..are you keeping tension on the line while you retrieve.? I appreciate the help and quick responses from everyone, I will let you know how goes after my next trip. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 10, 2020 Super User Posted May 10, 2020 Something like this, it usually happen when reel slack line after jerk/pop/jigging and rod at 1 or 12 o’clock . At first I thought it is a daiwa thing (have seen a few complained the same thing on Daiwa reel) but happen with shimano Sahara as well (4lb nanofil). I don’t sweat it too much, it would clear out the next cast. 1 Quote

It's stuck like that until I hopefully make a just as long as cast as before. A few times I have tried to open the bail and let line out to fix it and reel it back in, but that led to a few wind knots. 14 minutes ago, Adam.love05 said: Braid to leader.. Problem solved! That's what might end up happening, now that I don't have to contend with microwave guides. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 10, 2020 Super User Posted May 10, 2020 Don’t open the bail and pull line out on spinning reel if you don’t have no where to walk to keep tension on the line. When this happened I usually just cast it out as far as I could and reel in with firm tension apply. It is a good practice for spinning user to once awhile clear the line to get out of line twisted. 1 Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted May 10, 2020 Super User Posted May 10, 2020 Might need to remove a washer shim under the spool, if theres more than one. Daiwa abs spools should have a tapered line lay, not flat. That could result in line piling towards the bottom of the spool, rather than the top as it's supposed to. 2 Quote
