Sorry but I could not disagree more.  You have already said you don't fish them, so what is your experience based on.

I would go as far as to say 90% of “spook” striped bass were really caught on bait. Fishermen are notorious for lying.

Spooks look like fish busting on the water.  They can be very effective in the right situations.

The many available versions of the "spook" is a wise business tactic called 'Shaking The Money Tree'.

I've tried all the spook versions (all work), but prefer the 'Super Spook Junior".

Fish live in the hydrosphere and have a natural fear of predators in the atmosphere (osprey, eagles, man)

That may explain why topwater lures often have a less than impressive hook-up ratio.

Surface fishing vies for the most exhilarating angling method, but I resort to it sparingly.

Fished spooks for years - they all catch fish - bass are ambush hunters - the one ambush point common to all bass waters is the surface - as to hookup ratio it's good enough for me - most of my missed strikes have been from smaller fish.

I have 3, but most use the spook jr on small rivers in very early spring, before I break out the Whopper Plopper. It seems like they start hitting the spook before they start hitting the WP. I don't think I caught any fish on the Zara Puppy or One Knocker yet, but I have only fished them once or twice.

Why all the hate for the spook?! LOL. It walks easy and has always caught fish when they are hitting topwater. Never fished the Zara Spook because I like a rattle. I did buy a few when I go to the gulf coast as several old salts swear by silent topwater at night under the lights on a pier.

Only thing is the Chug'N Spook doesn't chug as much as I expected and wasn't as easy to walk because of its cupped face but it is louder than the super spook and I do have good success on it.

Excellent point:

It's not surprising that large bass display less fear than small bass, but it seems to be

particularly true for topwater fishing (atmospheric fear). Many years back (10-15 yrs),

there was a Bass Resource poll requesting the lure used to snag your Personal Best.

As it happened, the buzzbait received the most votes, which plays into the theory

of atmospheric fear (ospreys, eagles, even man).

Spooks and other topwaters are very good lures for bass fishing in Florida. I also noticed most of the missed strikes come from little bass. I rather catch a big bass and have caught lots of them on topwater lures.
