4" Ringworms

It seems of late the 4" ringworm has made a bit of a comeback with Mister Twister and Big Big Bite Baits adding them to their product line. I've used Zoom's 4" Dead Ringer with great success. I wanted to ask you guys what brands and colours you prefer?

B-Fish-N Tackle makes a ringworm that is very popular for spring river walleye. I have caught a smallmouth on electric blue/pearl tail when I tried it. They make a few bright colors that have a different colored "core" running down the middle that is pretty cool. Chartreuse/orange core is probably the best and would be a great smallmouth bait.

I was about to post about bfishin tackle ring worms. Amazing walleye baits and work just as well for smallmouth if you want to use them. Come in a lot of colors and aren’t expensive, hold up really well on a hook for how much action they have as well. Those ring worms are probably responsible for more 30”+ walleye caught on the Mississippi around me than any other baits combined.

I like the Producto Spring Worm.  One of my favorite colors is Tequila Sunrise.  They are the most flexible ring worm I've fished.  They have a flat tail, not the hook tail most others have. I sometimes throw straight black on drop shot to (try to) imitate a leech.

I Texas rig them with a 1/0 and use a 1/16, 1/8 and 3/16 oz. depending on conditions when I'm fishing cover. I'll also use a mushroom head or a ball head up to a 1/4 oz. when I'm swimming/jigging in open water up to 30 feet.

Okay I've only ever Texas Rigged them and never for smallmouth.

 

Never heard of swimming/jigging them. That is interesting. They are kind of like a variation of a swimbait or grub I guess though.

Luck-E-Strike ring worm is another brand also.  Black w/chartreuse tail or the purple with yellow tail. T-rigged with a 3/0 Gamakatsu round bend worm and a 1/8 oz weight was the ticket.

Basically. Most of the time I'll cast it out and let it sink to bottom, give a quick, short snap and start reeling and after about 5 feet let it glide to make bottom contact and repeat back to the boat. If the fish are suspended I'll just swim it. One thing that works excellent on Smallies sometimes is to swim the worm just on the sun side of the shade line as they use it as an ambush cover. I'll fish fairly high in the water column as they will come up and hit it.
