Can you change just the knobs on the Daiwa handles?

If so, can you point me to where they are available? (Not much immediately turning up in a search other than power knobs)

It's an inshore reel built for fighting fish much stronger than LM bass. I wasn't struck by the knobs one way or the other when I used my friend's. I'm not a giant like you, but I don't have small hands. Get the reel and try it before giving yourself a case over the knobs. The Tackle Trap has all sorts of factory Daiwa handles for sale. There was a Zillion 100mm handle for 24$ listed a while back. Check it out.

Ask in the for sale section as well. A lot of guys change them out for aftermarket knobs and have extra knobs of all varieties laying around.

Daiwa has a thing for thin knobs.  They have a slightly chunkier version of the new knob style on the Ryogas.

They Ryoga version is great, but I love the new smaller ones as well.  I would swap most all of my reels out to them if I had the money.

I also like the dreaded oldTat paddle knobs.  They are the best I have found for wet-handed us so they are on most of  my yak rods.

I had a chance to use the Coastal SV a bit the past couple days. It's not as free as the Elite, but it definitely feels a little less braked than the Tatula SV with 1/2oz. I don't think it's leaps and bounds better, but if you find a deal it's worth it for a little added performance and the zaion star. I don't think it will handle light baits as well because of the added weight from line capacity, but I have no reason to believe it wouldn't handle them well enough to get by. Need to do a more apples to apples comparison on the same rod to really gauge the performance.

Good info.

I like the previous gen CT SV over all of them. They cut a lot of corners on the new one.

Added hedgehog ZR bearings to one of my Elites tonight. Hopefully I can test it out this weekend and see if it makes a difference. Might try Air HD bearings on the next one.

How so?

How they cut corners or how I like it better?

Palms better to me, 3 full tournament seasons beating the hell out of em and they perform like day 1 with annual maintenance, and paint job is very durable.

Paint/Drag Star/knobs are lesser quality. Not to mention the gear issues with the new model.

That said I wish they would use a chunkier version of the new knobs and paint the reel gloss black or at least a satin black instead of the matte black and red thumb bar bushings.  An aluminum side plate would be nice too.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who doesn't like the matte black finish.

While I don't like the new knobs they are essentially the same knob that is found on the newer higher end Daiwas.  That same knob is definitely an upgrade when it is found down on the product line on a Tatula.  The old Tatula knobs were considered a low end trim knob and were not to be let near any of the higher end platforms outside of the US.  That was pretty much a Tatula knob and US market knob.

I had some of those knobs on a different reel the rubber started falling off. The ones on the spinning reels that are shorter in length haven’t had a issue with... I like the I knobs the best either way ?

I don’t mind matte black but not when your paying a premium for a reel. Tat 150 perfect example it’s basically like the Tat Tactical T.W. Had awhile back. Great reel for like a $109 on sale off the net. But $200+ for a reel there’s no reason not to have great paint job especially when it’s predecessor did.

I've only had time with the original Tatula SV, not the 2020 version, but that seemed to me the most refined Tatula to date, both cosmetically and mechanically. Especially at a $135 new reel price, it just looks so much better than the new version. Maybe I'm just a sucker for frame porting, lol. The new version just doesn't do anything for me.

Where are you getting the old SV@$135? That’s a great deal

The tackle trap had them at that price, but this was months ago.

Love my SV’s for lots of other applications but they only do the above marginally compared to the Elite.

Are you saying the Elite casts lighter lures better than the SV tws?

I'm looking for the best overall reel doing multiple applications.

Diawa versus Diawa?

Doesn't seem all that altruistic.

Still two reels essentially at different ends of the spectrum. They just share a manufacturer.

Always worth discussing reels at different price points, especially with Daiwa having many similar products priced only $50 apart from one another. When the new Curado drops, we'll talk about that 'til the cows come home.

Yes, but if skipping use the SV TW.

Don't sleep on the Coastal SV. You can currently get them for under $175 shipped. Got mine yesterday. Threw it at the local pond and I've got to say, it is one sweet reel.

Do you think the costal sv could cast as far as the elite with boca bearings in it.

What about the costal sv you think it can skip as good as the sv tw.

Yea there apparently pretty much the same, for me the costal just looks a lot better and I think if I put boca bearings in it could be great at everything. Whats your opinion on that.

Send a PM to iabass8... he’s the expert I go to on finer details like that ?

The Coastal is a beast and absolutely bombs lures over 1/2 oz. I use it mainly for bladed jigs but where it really shines is throwing spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. Baits that typically catch wind resistance and flutter.
