jhoep585 Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 (edited) 2020 Daiwa Tatula SV vs. Daiwa Elite Has anybody had a chance to compare these two? Is the Elite worth paying a few extra dollars for? I've heard the new 2020 SV has been getting great reviews. Is there a major difference or advantage to either? I'm looking for the best overall reel doing multiple applications. Super User Tywithay Posted May 8, 2020 Super User Posted May 8, 2020 I am sure I'll find a use for my SV, but I definitely think it's worth the extra for the Elite. I haven't really found anything the SV does that the Elite can't. I'm sure if I got a light action rod the SV would shine, but I've thrown a 1/8oz with the Elite and it flew more than far enough to be effective. With heavier baits it's not even fair. I also prefer the Elite's looks, but that's more of a personal thing. For what it's worth, I just ordered my 3rd Elite today and I just have the one SV. 1 Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted May 8, 2020 Super User Posted May 8, 2020 I have both, if you need to skip anything then go with the SV. Otherwise, the Elite gets an extra approx 20% in distance. Both great reels, with slightly different applications. 2 Quote
Cgrinder Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 I'm a big fan of the SV after being initially a bit underwhelmed by the plastic drag star and glossy finish. It casts very well with a variety of baits and doesn't feel restricted. For $200 and stock, I'm just about over the moon. I do not have the Long Cast to compare. However I do have the flippin Elite, which has great knobs and feels very solid. I like that reel a lot as well. Quote
MountainMan83 Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 Don't sleep on the Coastal SV. You can currently get them for under $175 shipped. Got mine yesterday. Threw it at the local pond and I've got to say, it is one sweet reel. 1 Quote

I can't comment on the Coastal SV, but highly recommend the Coastal 200 it is the best reel I own. I use it for everything, punching, deep cranks, and in shore saltwater. I was going to purchase another Coastal 200 but now am also considering the coastal SV. $175 shipped is a great price. Where? Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted May 8, 2020 Super User Posted May 8, 2020 Here’s where I have found the Tatula Elite to shine: •Throwing lighter or less aerodynamic lures like a Buzzbait or smaller jerkbait (X-Rap XR-08). You get the extra distance without having to re-injure your tennis elbow again •Bombing a Hard-Head/Biffle Bug farther than you could ever imagine - so you can drag it along the bottom and across seemingly endless flats for Smallies. Love my SV’s for lots of other applications but they only do the above marginally compared to the Elite. Quote

Yeah definitely, there's not much info out there about them. 15 minutes ago, king fisher said: I am also interested to hear what members think of the Coastal SV. I had an HD custom 153 spool in mine which turned it into Magforce Z. Great reel. You can get the Coastal SV new for that price at sportsmans outfitters. Use code "ABANDONED" to get $5 off the $179.99 list price. I'd hurry though. I don't think they have many left. 1 Quote

I've been wanting one since they first came out and hard to pass up on that deal. 1 Quote

freelancer27 Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 I have the Elite, 2020 Tatula SV TW, Coastal SV TW as well as the ELite P/F. Out of all I think the Coastal SV TW is the most versatile one. I can throw light lures on it as well as heavier ones, it has great line capacity, is super smooth and looks cool as well. For 175$ shipped it is a steal and I would get it. The Elite is a great all - around reel. It handles a good spectrum of lures, gets a bit finicky in windy situations for me. That is where the Tatula SV is more solid. It does not cast as well, but covers the spectrum with greater 'backlash' protection. The P/F (basically the Elite with a different handle and spool) is a solid pitcher. I tried it yesterday at a local pond with some 79# test braid. I dont see any noticeable difference in pitching performance to other reels to be honest, but I like the new knobs. Overall I would say that the new Elite platform is a win. I still prefer my Steezs' a bit, but they are not worth twice the price imo. 1 Quote
MountainMan83 Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 Oh, and pop the side plate off and check for grease on the gears. It was extremely smooth out of the box, but for how long? Daiwa seems to be notorious for shipping these newer models from the factory dry. Next to nothing on them. . 2 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted May 8, 2020 Super User Posted May 8, 2020 As a lifelong over-luber, I have been erring on the side of running my reels very very dry for a few years now and I have no noticed any reduction in smoothness. But my version of very very dry might be what they are supposed to be. I have a new TatSV that I am going to fish as-is until it starts fussing, so we shall see I guess. One of my first reels was some Lew's that had what I thought was a grease-port on the bottom. I will say for those who are wondering, a reel packed full of white lithium grease, while very smooth to crank, does not cast or fish all that well. I now believe it was a drain port incase the reel was dunked maybe? 1 Quote

AmmoGuy Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 Welp... the coastal Sv TW is one sweet looking reel. I had not put any thought into it until now. You people just keep spending my money for me. 1 Quote
AmmoGuy Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 Just so I’m clear.... the Coastal SV TW would make a great all around bass reel, right? 100 sized frame, 150 sized SV spool. would it potentially throw light tackle better than a Tat CT? Quote
AmmoGuy Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 17 minutes ago, BaitFinesse said: Maybe. With the spool capacity increase there will be a lot of line weight on the spool which would make it heavier and more difficult to use with lighter weight baits. That said as long as you are over 1/4 oz you should be fine. So realistically, no real ADVANTAGE over the CT for freshwater other than looking sweet, ha. Quote
AmmoGuy Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 9 minutes ago, BaitFinesse said: More line cap I believe and it is a much better palming reel. I believe this one also has an aluminum handle side plate which goes a long ways to keeping the reel smooth and quiet over time. The SV spool should also make it a better skipper than the CT but I have no experience with this one or deep SV spools in general. 10-4. I thought the coastal was a 100 frame, which should be pretty close to the CT palm wise? Just has my eye. I don’t have my CT yet, but for about 60 bucks more, I’m wondering if that coastal wouldn’t be a better buy. Quote
AmmoGuy Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 23 minutes ago, BaitFinesse said: It is but the 100 frame is much better palming than the CT. It is not nearly as long and more easy to wrap you finger around the front and the mag dial is does not rub becuse it is better recessed in the 100. I wonder why they opted for the small handle knobs on the coastal? if it had the larger knobs I think I’d be sold (I have big mits). Quote

AmmoGuy Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 37 minutes ago, BaitFinesse said: Daiwa has a thing for thin knobs. They have a slightly chunkier version of the new knob style on the Ryogas. Not sure why they don't use this knob on their US spec Tatula reels given that we have a preference for larger knobs than the rest of the markets. Maybe some day they will figure it out. That would be nice. Because those skinny knobs may keep me from pulling the trigger on the coastal. Quote
AmmoGuy Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 11 minutes ago, BaitFinesse said: I wouldn't let something as easily changed out as knobs stop your from buying a reel. There are endless knob options out ther for Daiwa reels. Can you change just the knobs on the Daiwa handles? If so, can you point me to where they are available? (Not much immediately turning up in a search other than power knobs) Quote
