Jaybert Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 I picked up a curado dc to try the DC tech. I could use an extra rod to pair with it. I have a few loomis imx pro and E6x as my go to rods now. Nothing against them they are great. But since this is really an extra combo & experiment with DC I’m not sure I need another expensive rod for it just yet. I know little of the Dobyns rods other than reading lots of good about them. I can get a pretty good deal on a fury on amazon even in Canada right now. So is a fury worth a try? Like as someone fishing E6x and imx pro now will I be disappointed or pleasantly surprised with this rod for the price? Im not expecting it to match the Loomis in performance. But I’m picky and don’t want to got to be underwhelmed too much. As an extra combo to try with the Curado DC is it a decent rod and value? Thinking 663C as I like a 6’6” rod generally. I’ve looked at mid range offerings from Fenwick, shimano, daiwa etc. Some decent stuff but nothing that jumps out at me as a sleeper. Dobyns is the one that appears it may be a lot of rod for the money. But I could be wrong perhaps? Quote
kayaking_kev Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 I have the 663c and I like it for jerkbaits and it's also my do all rod for kayak fishing skinny rivers. It's a very versatile rod and I can't really complain about the sensitivity. I guess my only concern if I were you, would be using a heavier reel with it and how it's going to balance with the Curado DC. I have a SLX MGL 70 on mine right now and also use a SLX XT with it and they balance great with it. I probably wouldn't put my SLX DC on it unless I had to, but that's just me. I mean it's not going to balance terribly with the Curado DC and you would probably have a hard time finding any 6'6 rod that's going to balance a DC reel perfectly, unless it's a Metanium. I did have a couple of Shimano SLX rods but they were 7'2 MH and 7'5 H and didn't balance well at all, even with heavier reels, even though they were lighter than the Fury. I have heard the shorter SLX rods don't have the balance issue and might even balance better with a Curado DC, but the warranty is crap on them compared to Dobyns. I've had a Fenwick before and it was a little to heavy for me with bad balance, but it was also a bigger rod. I've never tried a Daiwa rod yet, so I don't know about them. The AirXD and Tatula XT seem like good values. I'm guessing you don't have a store near you that carries some of the models where you can take your reel with you and test the balance out of them or else that would be the way to go. Quote

Great info thanks! Yah no opportunities to test one out around here that’s for sure. The DC reels are cool but the balance can be an issue. The DC seems ok balance on my MBR783 loomis but I already have a reel for that rod. A 7’ fury maybe a better balance? I’m not against the longer rod just used to 6 6” and even have a 6’ loomis CR With a curado 70. I’m with you and have had a couple Fenwick in the past I liked but the hmg I handled recently didn’t impress me for the price. Also last shimano I tried was a couple years ago now but same issue. Was a Clarus and I found it disappointing even at the lower price point. So was trying to check out a different unfamiliar brand with what appears to be a strong following 1 Quote

So was trying to check out a different unfamiliar brand with what appears to be a strong following The Fury 703c was the first of 14 Dobyns rods I bought and there's really no difference between it and the 663c, the 663c weighs 4.4 and the 703c, 4.5. If I get a chance later, I might throw my DC on the 663c and see how it balances and take a pic for you, because it's kind of weird with Dobyns rods sometimes, they do seem to balance well no matter if it's a 6.9 oz or 7.9 oz reel. waymont Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 Fury 663c is a great everything rod. Balances great with Curado K. I also use all Loomis IMX, GLX, and E6x rods, and the sensitivity is much less with the Fury. However for moving stuff, and even 1/4oz jigs you will enjoy it. It’s also a decent crank bait rod. I have one as a beater rod, and like it quite a bit. Quote
Jaybert Posted May 8, 2020 Author Posted May 8, 2020 Thanks again for the great replies I’ll check the 663C out a bit closer for sure. All I have read so far says they run light as far as rated power which is ok with me. Anyone know how the 663c would compare in that regard to the loomis MBR783c that I’m familiar with? MBR783 runs a bit light for a MH but is plenty heavy for me. If fury ran lighter yet it wouldn’t be bad for some of my uses as an all purpose rod Quote
shackman Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 The fury 703c is one of my most versatile rods. Have it paired with a ch50mg and combo weighs about 10oz Quote
plawren53202 Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 Not into high end gear as much as some on here, so I have a Fury as my primary rod. 734c. I absolutely love it. Super sensitive, light, balanced, just a great workhorse that I got on sale for $79 USD. Quote
