Everything you read about setting spool tension on a baitcaster is wrong on the Tatulas, unless it is specific to Daiwa. They work differently. Video below. Set it and you'll probably never mess with it again.

thanks, I have done this except I did not have the mag dial set to 10 I had set to 10. Instead of making a cast I was dropping the jig down to the floor. I will try this tomorrow. I seem to be able to get it to where I can bounce the rod up and down the jig barely moves, I back off about 1/32 of a turn and it drops to the floor and backlashes horrible. curious if everyone else has the same touchiness of spool tension?

imo, the dropping slowly with out backlash when it hits the floor is a myth. I tighten it until there is slight play. Using these reels is a learning experience, at the end of the day, it just takes time. That being said. put it on ten, make sure line is over the bar, and slowly loosen the spool tension like you did, starting at tight until it works

ps what line rod and lure?

Update: tried several times to cast the reel with no success, took the reel apart looking for anything out of the ordinary. found nothing. put the reel back together. Started noticing a difference right away. I was able to cast the reel just fine. I threw a few casts into the wind and was able to control that just fine. I don't see how anything internally could have been off or wrong considering I put everything back the same way it originally was, but there is a huge difference in the way the spool reacts to dropping a lure to the ground or casting it. I dialed the brake down to 10 one click at a time. at 10 I had a slight amount of overrun mid cast. took it back up to 12 and didn't see any more signs of a backlash the rest of the time out. appreciate all that have helped me try and figure this thing out. sorry I cant give a definitive answer of what was happening.

I would wager you put the line over the bar after taking it apart.

My guess would be that when you took it apart you touched the inductor that was probably stuck, maybe a piece of dirt, and it was freed. Now the cast control system is working. Do you remember moving the inductor when you opened it up? Was it moving freely?

the line was over the bar in the beginning, that was one of the first things I checked.

I don't know honestly, maybe. I didn't change anything on purpose, so maybe accidently. not sure. I know it was acting like the brake was never there and when I put it back I was able to dial down the brake and still use the reel. until this point the spool was pretty incontrollable.

Cool. I bet that was the issue. I always check that when I open my Diawa reels. Just push the inductor lightly straight down to make sure it's moving freely.

Your problem really seems like the cast control wasn't working at all.
