If you catch to eat for any reason ? Bless you. Do it.

After that ? I do not call " Bed Catching "  fishing.  Just throw a Cherry Bomb in the bed & pull the hooks into the mouth  of the biggest.  There is a reason some states CLOSE bass fishing during the Bedding Time.

Add in the Gobies after the eggs. Our area is loaded with Gobies.   The state still does not feed game fish the Gobies. Why not  Teach the fish to eat them.

For me the spawn means catching 12-14" buck bass one after the other on topwater. Wish I could at least catch one that was a buck and a half.

Texas is open during spawn & lead the nation in bass fisheries biology.

Bed fishing is like shooting fish in a barrel. Not a tough thing. They attack almost anything you throw to protect the bed. I quit that long time ago.

Don't bed fish much do you  ?

No, like I said I found it not a challenge. I am a sport fisherman and to me there was no sport there. That’s why there are aight classes in fighting, youth sports are per age or size. Why, to make it a fair sport. That’s just my thoughts

Texas has great bass fishing but does it really lead the nation in bass fisheries biology? I would say Florida or Georgia has that title.

I would have caught the fish eating the bass eggs and had a fry.

Have you ever eaten deep fried fish roe? Kinda like a fish dumpling.

In general Charlie felt that fishing for bedding fish would not negatively impact a lake. There are several reasons for this assumption. For starters even in a clear-water lake there are, in theory, a large number of bass that should spawn and never be subject to fishing pressure by being found by the fisherman. The exception here is if the lake is very small or there is extensive repetitious pressure in a small area. Those conditions can put real stress on the spawning population by having them either selectively removed if people catch and keep the spawning bass or simply put the bass under repetitious physiological shock from multiple harassment or hook sets.

Nope not even close ?

The Texas ShareLunker program lead the nation in genetic research. If a bass doesn't have the genes on both the female & males side it doesn't matter what it's food source is that bass will not obtain double digit size.

Every lake in Texas is man made & was socked with fingerlings from the ShareLunker program.

I will do further research on this subject to see how the Texas ShareLunker program compares to the Florida TrophyCatch program. What is the biggest bass submitted this year to the ShareLunker program? What about last year? A bunch of +13 pounders have been submitted to the TrophyCatch program this year including a 14 pound, 11 ounce bass. Last year a man submitted a 15 pound, 13 ounce bass to TrophyCatch, what was the last time a bass bigger than that was submitted to the ShareLunker program? Thousands of bass have been submitted to the TrophyCatch program and every year more and more catches are submitted. Most of the catches come from Central and Northern Florida which is the best place in the nation to catch a 8 pound or better bass. Please let me know what data you find that supports your conclusion.

Don't argue with the ShareLunker program. Hands down the best in the country.

What was the biggest bass submitted this year and last year to the Sharelunker program? Anyone can have a opinion on a subject but facts will always be facts.

I don't know off the top of my head, lol.

Texas' state record is bigger though.

Edit* A quick Google search shows a 15.34 caught this year

Hey BR,

I immediately got my pliers and practiced the lure retrieving method through the gills. I kept him in the water reviving while I tried to get the lure out. The lure wouldn't budge. I decided I had to cut the line and just leave the lure there. I let him go and he swam off like a bullet. I waited a while to see if he went back on the bed, nothing. The other fish that was near the bed were nowhere to be found, they had vanished and left there bed. I watched as the bluegill and perch began to eat the eggs. I tried to throw the lure to keep them from eating them. I waited 15 min and the bass never went back to there bed. I honestly blame myself for interfering with the fish, is there any chance the fish will come back?? They were locked on when I first saw them. I later came back when I was returning home cause I had to go. I passed by and the bluegill and perch, and they were still eating the eggs. I want to try and come back and catch the fish if he ever comes back to get the lure out.

So I have decided to not fish on bed for the fear of the eggs being eaten.

You’re a good dude. Don’t worry about it. We’ve all had upsetting angling experiences...it just happens. I remember trying to revive a baby pickerel once for like 20 minutes because I felt so bad.

But i fish to eat occasionally and I bed fish, too. I don’t see anything wrong with it myself. I can see why some might but I don’t. We’re just one of a million predators out there doing our thing.

You have the important stuff covered. You obviously care about the fishery and you’re aware of whose house you’re in. That’s what REALLY matters at the end of the day.

How many 13 pound or bigger bass where submitted to the Texas ShareLunker program this year? I see at least 15 bass that where 13 pounds or bigger submitted to FWC TrophyCatch program. From what I read there are more 8.0-12.9 pound bass submitted to the TrophyCatch program this year as well. From this data it is clear that Florida is leading the nation in Trophy bass catches this year. Bigger bass have been caught in Florida including some over 20 pounds.

I think most of here do our best to release bass safety. If Martin does not what to bed fish that is ok with me and I respect his decision. We need more people like that and less people who kill spawning bass to put on the wall (no need to kill a bass when you can get a high quality replica).

Seems like Florida is still winning this year with 15 bass submitted that where 13 pounds or bigger including a 14 pound, 11 ounce bass. Last year a 15 pound, 13 ounce bass (+15.81 pounds) was caught in Florida, when was the last time a bass bigger than that was caught in Texas? From what I researched Florida has beat Texas in 2019 and so far this year 2020. Visit the website TrophyCatchFlorida.com and compare catches with TexasShare Lunker program, Florida is winning this year. With this said both states have awesome bass fishing and anyone fishing these states should have a very good chance at catching a bass of a lifetime.

My wife likes it . I tried it once but didn’t. I make up for it with all the fish I eat though!

@soflabasser What you're missing is Florida started with Florida Strain bass in its many lakes.

Texas started with zero lakes!

Not only did Texas have not have any lakes they had a very limited brood stock of native bass.

Next texas Imported bass from Florida, California, & Cuba into its hatchery facility.

ShareLunker started out only accepting bass 13 lbs plus but because of the program's success over last couple years lowered it to 8 lbs plus.

Same with me.  The water is muddy, choppy, or stained enough that I can't see them the vast majority of the time.  I do know when I am casting to areas that could very well be spawning areas just like you.  So you could say we are fishing beds, but not one specific bed.

I don't bed fish intentionally as it feels unsportsmanlike to me personally but I don't look down on those that do.

Thanks for doing what you could to get that jig out of the fish.
