Super User Teal Posted May 6, 2020 Super User Posted May 6, 2020 Why didnt I think of this sooner? I've always liked to pitch spinner baits into spots and pick fish off, but between the milfoil,(both dead and new growth) and hyrdrilla, it wasnt working and craws worked for a bit but then it slacked off. So I was working the edges of sparse vegetation with a Kietech Easy Shiner on a 1/4 ounce weighted SB hook, on an errant pitch I went into the mush, I popped it through and it fell into a hole in it, and whamm.. that became the pattern this evening, back ends of spawning coves shallow, clear.water with dense vegatation. From the boat had to pitch the easy shiners into the holes on the shore line side... my 10 year and I wore them slap out making 10 to 15 foot pitches and flips with a sexy shad kietech easy shiner. I've been on flipping bites, but not with soft swim baits as the preferred bait. Typically it's a craw, creature or even a worm/lizard. Easy shiner won the day Mostly skinny males, a couple thick girls too. We had a cold front last night so I'm guessing that's what backed them up in the grass. This ever happen to yall? 2 Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted May 6, 2020 Super User Posted May 6, 2020 As long as you're using a decent swimbait I feel this can work. By decent swimbait, I mean one that the tail still kicks on the fall. I've had success doing similar, and also by killing it when I get over a hole in my retrieve. It can be a killer way to catch'em! I do it, but more lazy than plan. If I'm working swimbait on bottom and come upon wood or weed cover, I may just continue with what's in my hands instead of switching rods. However, I do pitch a Rage-rigged Cut-R quite a lot and that is nearly as much a swimbait as a worm. 1 Quote
Super User king fisher Posted May 6, 2020 Super User Posted May 6, 2020 Punching mats with Skinny Dippers is the standard presentation with guides on Lake Chapala Mexico. I was stubborn and stuck to beaver style baits. Being stubborn is not a good personality trait for bass fishing. I learned my lesson, and the bait monkey is happy. I now have many different brands sizes and colors of swimbaits when I fish Chapala. The guides only use Skinny Dippers, and catch more fish than me, but they are not the bait monkeys good friend. 1 Quote

I like the skinny dipper. It's one of my favorite trailers. I've been on a kick few weeks with the soft swimbaits and its showing. The easy shiner is my favorite this week as a stand alone bait. I'm gonna start over this evening, I may try a shorter swimmer as a jig trailer and see what happens. Quote

Big Swimbait Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 (edited) It can be deadly. Lateley I have been pitchin' the Magnum Rage Menace with a pegged weight. It's amazing how much noise that bait makes on a quick drop. Edited May 7, 2020 by BigBassBo video 1 Quote
Ogandrews Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 In the summer my number one bait for flipping docks and lay downs is a 3/8th oz dirty jigs no jack swim jig with a 4.8 keitech on it, fishing it just like you would a flipping jig or t rig. I have had success throwing a straight up swimbait as well but I have better luck with a swimjig for some reason. Figured it out one day when I didn’t have any flipping stuff and I wanted to do it, threw out the swim jig I had tied on and wow did it work. Thinking outside the box and trying stuff you don’t always read about has always worked great for me. Quote
