Ksam1234 Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 Anyone else experiencing this insane weather lately? And how is it effecting you and the fish? Here in western New York we keep seeing crazy fluctuations in temps. It was 65-70 and sunny all weekend and now we have a freeze warning and potential snow with temps dropping to 34 degrees.. rain comming and then back into the 65 degree area! Also not to mention the crazy wind lately! Not 15-20 mph but 30-40 mph sustained with 50-70 mph gusts!!! What is this! Quote

Super User Bird Posted May 4, 2020 Super User Posted May 4, 2020 Yep, wild weather around here has put a damper on fishing. Heavy cold rains, high winds and well below normal temps. Our local lake temp went from low 60's back to 50* and I see 30's in upcoming forecast. I'd be curious what effect this will have on spawn. 1 Quote

I’m thinking just a long drawn out ore spawn and spawn phase, well into June maybe July. Quote
M_Bassin2882 Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 Yep here in Southwest PA we’ve been up and down in temperatures, went to Erie and fished PIB last Friday and got blown off the water. I agree I could see it prolonging there prespawn/spawning period. 1 Quote

I remember it snowing on the 4th of May a pretty good amount here in NE KS a couple years ago. Last year it was barely above freezing through April, then it was in the 80's and 90's all May and rained a ton almost every day and the big lakes didn't make it back to normal pool until winter time. I can't ever remember an even tempered spring. 1 1 Quote

Super User Teal Posted May 5, 2020 Super User Posted May 5, 2020 Well the saying around here is, if you wana know what the weather is in NC, wait 10 minutes. 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted May 5, 2020 Super User Posted May 5, 2020 Recently heard a report claiming this past April was the coolest in 15yrs. So, I must have been disgruntled 15 yrs ago, just can't remember. I just want to hang up the gloves and toboggan. Lol 2 Quote

I mean I am staying positive and hoping maybe the pre spawn and spawn will just last into July and I can catch more fish ! Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted May 5, 2020 Super User Posted May 5, 2020 Been "turbulent" here too. AOK though. Nights are short now. Sun is high. A couple years ago we got 40" of snow on May 19th. About a decade back we got 68" in 3days! Both were gone in a week. That 68er had 80F temps following. I'm at high elevation so, those numbers are extreme. But... spring has sprung, life will go on... with a bit of turbulence. Agreed a bit more turbulence than "usual". 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted May 5, 2020 Super User Posted May 5, 2020 We have 3 nights this week forecasted in the mid 30's. The migration of Loons in these parts is starting to make sense. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted May 5, 2020 Super User Posted May 5, 2020 We got a few nights later in the week where it'll dip into the 30s - including one where we'll hit the freezing mark. But this IS early May in MN - we've had snow this time of year in the past...so no biggie. 1 Quote

Our Malamutes aren't really blowing their under coats much so far either. And could be a very bad sign . . . A-Jay 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted May 5, 2020 Global Moderator Posted May 5, 2020 bold prediction for East Tennessee: it will get hot this summer and everyone will say “we didn’t even get a spring this year, straight off into summer again” This statement will come shortly after 3-4 months of gorgeous spring weather. Then from late September to Christmas it will be gorgeous fall weather and the first time it gets cold you will hear “straight off into winter, skipped fall all together “ 2 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 5, 2020 Super User Posted May 5, 2020 For most of April the temps were warm early in the week and midweek. Then on Friday or Saturday we would get a cold front that brought cold rain. Quote
813basstard Posted May 5, 2020 Posted May 5, 2020 I forget some of y’all live in a walk in freezer.. Surface temps yesterday were 88. I seen a bass with sunscreen and a visor. I lost 3 pounds walking from the truck to the boat...my lovely bride found those 3 and....never mind 4 Quote

I'll take the walk in freezer for half the year as opposed to the sauna for a full year. First time I visited my future in-laws (this was to move the future wife up here) I told them that between May and October I would NOT be visiting. (MIL lived in Boca, FIL lived in Ft. Cdn Angler Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 Opening day for pike and it is a polar vortex. Literally. Projected high: just above freezing. Not that I was looking forward to fishing after all this time on house arrest or anything so no biggie. 1 Quote

I went up North last year a couple weeks past opener and there was still snow on the ground and water temps below 48. Coldest spring on record. Didn't catch much. The worst is that this past weekend was gorgeous, mid 70's, but nothing is open until this weekend and it looks like a few weeks of cold, cold and more cold. I'll be out hacking away anyways some how or other. Quote
